4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, January 25, 1989 Novice OMHA off to fine playoff start Friday night Rocking Roughleys began their playoffs in a 'Round Robin. The first team to come up against Orono was Omemee. Previous games with Omemee ended ended up in a tie and a win and our boys knew they were up against a fast skating team. Orono had trouble trouble keeping up with Ornemee's no. 14 as he was an excellent play maker and skater. The Omemee team had a few players out due to the flu and the Orono team still didn't play up to par. Orono scored their first goal to tie the game in the first period. Omemee's no. 14 skated from their end down through the Orono players, scoring his second goal. In the second period Orono scored the next 2 goals going ahead 3-2. Orono scored 2 more goals in the 3rd period putting the game out of reach. Scott Sawyer stopped numerous shots as the Orono defense were lax. The Orono forwards forwards still are not passing and playing playing their position properly. If Orono plans on doing well on this first round of players they must pull together as a team, otherwise they won't get past the first round. Orono's second game against Millbrook was cancelled due to, too many players out with the flu on the Millbrook team. Orono goal scorers were: Greg Bull - unassisted; Scott MacDonald with three, assisted by Brett Maartense with 2, B.J: Hackett with 2 and one assist to Ryan Winning; Winning; goal going to Ryan Winning unassisted. Orono plays Ops for the first time Friday, January 27th and on January 29th they travel to Omemee. , Orono Tyke fine play ties Bowmanville squad Once again our Orono Tykes put on a fine performance for- their home town fans this past Friday evening as they came from behind to tie their Bowmanville opponents by a 3-3 score. Despite the fact that for the second second week in a row we were missing 4 skaters (down with the flu) our boys played as though they had a full squad. The first period was scoreless. There were plenty of opportunities opportunities for both teams but neither goaltender was going to easily give up a goal, Orono came on strong in the second second period. Kyle Beacock feathered a pass to Andrew Reid who made sure his shot hit the mark to put Orono on the scoreboard first early in the period. Then on their next shift they reversed the procedure as Kyle beat the Bowmanville goalie on a pass from Andrew. Alan Robb, who was a last minute volunteer to play goal, played a very strong game between the pipes for Orono. He was there when we . needed him on ' several breakaways and inspired the boys on but it was Bowmanville who would score next iate in the period. The score 2-1 Orono. , Bowmanville started the third period strong putting two quick goals on the scoreboard. It seemed as though we had fallen asleep for a moment or maybe it was all the double shifting catching up to us but here we were now suddenly down by a 3-2 score. Alan Robb played strongly in the Orono goal to keep Bowmanville from increasing their lead. Finally Orono was able to find the Bowmanville goal at the mid point in the period. Andrew Reid hit the mark as he was set up by passes from Andrew Beacock and Tyler Robinson. The rest of the period went scoreless but we were kept biting our fingernails as the boys played their entire last shift in the Orono end zone unable to clear the puck out. Finally the buzzer went, the game was over and we had held on to a 3-3 tie. Congratulations Congratulations boys on a game well played. Everyone was working hard and there was little sÿn of anyone giving up. We have a busy next few weeks boys so lets all try to stay healthy and for those down with the flu this past weekend, Kevin Copping, Bobby Bobby Witheridge, Clint Hawkshaw and Jamie Parry "Get Well Soon!" Next game Friday, January 27th in Orono against Newcastle. Special thanks to Gord Lowery for being a last minute, referee. • Matthews & Associates OMHA PeeWee news January 9, 1989 the Omemee crowd was in Orono to face the locàls in a game of what? Hockey?. In addition to our regular (awesome) eight skaters and two poised goalies the team welcomed Jamie Shetler to share in the action. And share he did, with good solid right wing play. The end of the first period saw the score tied 1-1. Orono tying goal scored by Chris Yeo, assist Trevor Lomax, The second period was scoreless for the Orono squad with Omemee cashing in one more lime. For third period action wc saw the Omemee club score three goals to our one. A goal by Daryl Reid assisted by Trevor I omax (von old playmakcr you). Final viirv Omemee 5 Orono 2. January 13th Orono Peewees played their last league game in Cobourg. It was a very competitive match with the score tied in the middle of the third period 3 to 3, but the Orono squad was showing signs of tiring with only 7 skaters. The final score was 5 to 3 for Cobourg. The Orono goals were 2 for Daryl Reid and 1 by Mike Landers with assists going to Paul Flintoff, Aaron Staples, Chris Yeo, Henry Kaldewây and Jason Hansen. Get well soon Trevor! January 16th Orono starts the playoffs on a losing note against the Millbrook squad. The final score was Millbrook 5 - Orono 0. This comes as no surprise because Millbrook has a very fine squad and Orono OMHA Atoms mix good with bad Well we have had some good luck and some bad luck during the past week. First the good luck. On Thursday, January 17th we journeyed to Little Britain for the first time this year. Our squad having having been decimated with injuries and the flu bug lacked something in numbers but Jason Lawrence, an earlier victim of a broken arm had come to play his first game in six weeks, and this quickly became evident evident as his aggressive play brought him a penalty at 5:50 of the first period. All members of the team were working hard and kept the pressure on the Little Britain team. Some end to end rushes and a penalty for each side in the second ' period seemed to open the game up a little giving Jason Lawrence time to grab an unassisted goal at 2:44. Jeff Goodmurphy, who was minding minding the net for the first time this year, made some outstanding saves and had some good luck to end the second period without further scoring, scoring, At 6:50 of the third period Jamie Shetler, playing his usual steady game, scored a beatiful goal following a rush and decking the Little Britain netminder. Little Britain Britain refused to lay down and came back with heavy pressure on our defence and following a scramble around our net managed to spoil what could have been a shutout in another 4 minutes. At 2:27 following following a short lapse by our defense, Little Britain roared back with another goal to tie the score at 2 all. It looked like we would have to settle settle for a tie however our defense seemed to want to make up for their previous errors and at 1:09 Steve Bonneau got a good pass to 'smoothie' Shetler who once again slid the rubber disk under a sprawling sprawling Little Britain goalie. Little Britain Britain fought hard but we refused to give up, ending victorious. On Friday our boys sneaked out of school early for a 2:30 p.m. game at the famous Lift Lock Atom Tournament in Peterborough. This writer was unable to attend (some one had to mind the store) but according according to my son, the team they met was a hard skating team of lumberjacks from Bancroft who let them score the first goal when Jason Lawrence tallied on a pass from Thomas Wakefield. From then on things went downhill, in : spite of good efforts from all team members, as Bancroft Jets scored 1 six unanswered goals. On Saturday, January 21st our is picked to win all Ontario. Manvers Tournament January 21st - Game 1, Orono 7, St. Pauls, Peterborough 0. Scoring Mike Landers, 3 goals and 1 assist; Chris Yeo, 2 goals and 4 assists; Daryl. Reid, 1 goal and 2 assists; Aaron Staples, 1 goal and 1 assist; with 1 assist each going to Paul Flintoff, Henry Kaldeway and Jason Hansen, Well done Jarrett Aus and Chad Maartense. Game 2 - Orono 7, Newcastle 4. Scoring Daryl Reid, 3 goals and 3 assists; Chris Yeo, 2 goals and 2 assists; Henry Kaldeway, 1 goal; Brandon Ovendon 1 goal and 2 assists; with assists going to Michael Landers, Paul Flintoff and Jason Hansen. Game 3 - Championship, St. Stevens, Peterborough 5, Orono 2. The Orono boys played well, but lost to a better team. Orono goals were scored by Daryl Reid and Chris Yeo. Congratulations to Chris Yeo for being selected Orono's M.V.P. Special thanks to Steven Shetler and Brandon Ovenden. Get well soon Trevor. lads once again travelled to Peterborough Peterborough for the second and third games of this tournament. Saturday dawned bright and clear and promised promised to be a day to remember with the mercury on the wall outside my kitchen window down so low it had pulled the nail out of the wall which held the thermometer, and the Oil in my diesel Rabbit must have been like 'molasses in January' as it groaned to life after several tries. I think the temperature must have affected affected the boys as well, as they got off to a slow start, The Douro team tallied first at making it one all at 8:05. End to end rushes and close calls kept the spectators standing on the seats for the balance of the first period. A change of ends for the second period seemed to confuse our lads, as Douro tallied at 7:57, 7:33, 5:41 and 5:11. At 2:04 Jamie 'smoothie' Shetler brought the witnesses back to life with another nice goal. We changed ends again and at 9:11 the Douro squad forced us into some sloppy play to make the score 6 to 2. Our defense Steve Bonneau, Wade Peacock, Jeff Goodmurphy and Danny Rowe decided they would not be further embarrassed and with the assistance of forwards Jeff Gates, Jonathan Burnham, Jason Lawrence, Jamie Shetler, Simon Weagant and Thomas (Continued page 6) MOM'S KITCHEN DOWNTOWN ORONO 9 83-53 1 0 EAT IN or TAKE OUT A Tasty Special HOT BEEF SANDWICH 4.25 Offer Good Until Tuesday, January 31st at 6:00 p.m. • Mon. - Wed. - 6:30 to 6:00 p.m. Thurs.. 6:30 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. Fri. 6:30 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Saturday 6:30 a.m. Sunday 5:00 p.m. Closed INTERIOR PAINT SALE SHEpuiin Ï 2099 CEILING WHITE SHERUJin UJiiyams 2599 BtUBttyJP 4L ** LATEX FLAT LATEX SEMI-GLOSS ALSO ON SALK • KEM GLO VELVET FLAT • LATEX fi AIXYD LOW LUSTRE »ALKYD SEMI-GLOSS • LATEX & ALKYD UNDERCOATS Mt KEM*. your guarantee / A of service, quality 8 value.
