Newtonville Alive Whew! After last weeks column and all the ranting, raving, hooting and cringing I did about racism, the perspiration from all the frustration still seems to be causing discomfort. It makes one wonder why in the name of everything that is sacred and humane, and with all of the technology in this day and age how much a severe problem can exist where thousands of undesirables continue to flock into Canada year after year after year. Mere months after some refugee claimants enter Canada, reports surface of crimes committed and they are committed by some of these people. How much more? Why can't something be done? Why can't someone in authority (fortunately or otherwise) take a stand, make a decision on a better screening method No More? So much bickering goes on in Parliament. It is a joke to wàtch a session of television. It seems to me like there is a contest going on to see who can sling the worst insult, criticize the loudest or get the biggest biggest laugh from the gallery. No - this is not from the "mouths of babes," but from the "Halls of Parliament." I am sorry and I am sad. It is increasingly increasingly becoming more and more . difficult to stand as a patriotic Canadian. Times have changed. Tables have turned. When I was in school, I worked part time at a publishing house in Toronto. There I was able to collect quite a number of books. The books I was most eager to obtain were those about Canada. Those written by Canadians, about her people, her lands and heritage. Most will agree with me on the subject of (eeek!) Quebec. The state of the union with La Belle Province is a world away from the image of twenty years ago. I blame the poli- tians for this. They who were primarily from Quebec or represented in Quebec, have caused the rest of Canada to feel that here is yet another minority trying to run and monopolize the main body. So much rich history lies in Quebec. It is an unfortunate fact though, that if asked, many Canadians would cry, "Let them separate, but they are not taking what (hey want with them!" Isn't it a crime itself that real "Canadian Quebeckers" have been out in the same category as the sepàratist few... Well, believe it or not, there is still hope. Our greatest attribute is the Canadian people. If the Federal Government could stop and see this. Re-realize all the wealth and potential we have, then get on with it. Get on with the serious business of running a country - proudly - with patriotism waving in the flag of the future all over the country. Rah! Rah! Rah! Thanks to everyone who cared to share their personal feelings of support support with me on racism, immigration immigration and our police forces.' Of course, of .course we maintain..there are good and bad in every race, in every community. Yes! This is winter. It is January. With recent temperatures passing ■v,- the 40 degree F. mark, we would rather think that spring arrives in less than eight weeks, than believe that we will undoubtedly get alot of the snow promised by this year's Farmer's Almanac... The warm sun rays shining in the windows brightening and drying up the road sure makes it difficult to fight off "The Bug.." He is teasing, tickling and tempting me desperately, desperately, to seek out my pedal-pushers by Peggy Mullan and garden tools! For shame! There is even many a twinkle in the eyes of our local teens - for more than motorcycles and baseball games.. Talking about spring here, will likely jinx us all. So let's have it. Seeing all the growth in housing development all over the area has got to be a little overwhelming. Seems as though it has all began in the 1st year. From Ajax to Port Hope, everywhere you go, there it is! Styles and designs in homes range from rustic looking log cabins to solarized castles with turrets and stone fences. Some in the most unlikely places too. What seems to be a popular style is towards the old type of home; comfortable verandahs, verandahs, "gingerbread work," bay windows, pine floors and railings and the ever present glow of a fire - in a woodstove or open fireplace. If you are a pillar of patience, with some ingenuity, talent, preserverance and foresight, and have or want an authentic relic of your own - you will be blessed, (in the end). Owning an old home gives you almost instant warmth and that true feeling of a home. This is not without a cost .'No matter how darling darling or how perfect your home feels, the longer you are there, look out - the more of the hidden secrets and multitude of trying challenges will show their faces. Watch your language and do not despair! The best bet is first to deal with priority disasters first. Heating, insulating, electrical and the like. Decorating, unfortunately has to go down near the bottom of the list...Level two and what to tackle next? The thing to do is one room at a time after major necessities are fixed up. It will seem simpler and results show up quicker. Remember, always chin ■ up. Your rewards in the end from your own home, reflecting you and your own family, will be limitless. Honest! This Newtonville cplumn is special to me. The people in the community are probably the best and mqst important part.. This column column is different from those in the past, and for me, it is how I like it. In ever sense though, it is your column, column, your voice. Hopefully as time goes on, more of a voice for more residents in the area. I am not really much of a "busy ' body"...In other-words you might ■ have to give me a call, or grab me on ,the street to put your "little scoops" or 2 cents in. Please Do. My number, 786-2964. I have healthy support in the past year. I have had the phone slammed in my ear a time or two, as well, I have had suggestions and disagreements t'oo. Dandy! I would love as many people as possible to contribute to their community community column. I stress that very often, if you do not let me in on what's happening in your own circle, circle, about special celebrations and so on, I won't know. The court was told that 2 tonnes of sulphur trioxide was released into into the atmosphere at the Copper Cliff refinery on August 19, 1987. The contaminant mixed with water vapour and created a cloud of sulphuric acid spanning roughly a square kilometre. The cloud descended on 2 children's camps, a group of government offices, as well as resort and residential areas. Inco faced 7 charges of emitting a contaminant and 1 charge of failing to report,, the release. The gas escaped through 3 safety systems and a vital warning instrument failed failed to operate. When the Inco controllers controllers finally realized a leak had occurred, they did not report it immediately immediately to the Ministry of Environment Environment because they assumed the gas would be dispersed by the 200m smoke stack. The source was not however the smelter, it was the acid plant. A fine of $10,000 for each charge was recommended in a joint submission submission by the prosecutor for the Ministry of Environment and the defense lawyer for Inco, The maximum maximum fine under the Canadian Environmental Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) is $1 million per day and imprisonment for up to 5 years. Court Judge W.M. Fitzgerald accepted accepted the recommendation saying that the fine was large enough not to be seen as just a slap on the wrist. The prosecuting attorney, Dianne Saxe, said the Ministry would have sought a much stiffer penalty if Inco Inco had not responded so quickly to the incident. As for Inco, they issued a public apology in the newspaper the day after the leak and has promised to change the equipment and-procedures so that a leak will not happen again. The federal government passed to chairperson Clarence Bell 623-5939. The next Heritage meeting is scheduled for January 27th. All are welcome to get involved and see just how many great things can and will happen for all communities in the Town of Newcastle. - Congratulations to Newtonville Public School grade 4 portable class and their teacher Jean Hoy. Always enjoy hearing from and about you too! - Happy 77th Birthdy on January 30th to a special lady. She is my pal, my loyal supporter, sometimes my dance partner, singing buddy and confidente. Happy Birthday to my mother-in- law Audrey Mullan. You're 'the best, Audi! - Thanks and hoorahs to all those special ladies who are only "old" in numbers, certainly not in any other way. I hope I can do half as much, half as well, if I get to be past 70! provide a framework for protecting Canadians from all forms of pollution pollution caused by toxic substances. The need for such a program is supported supported by surveys such as the one conducted by The Environmental Monitor which showed that 87 Vo of Canadians get upset about the lack of action being taken to protect the environment. CEEA operates under the general belief that convictions and fines are an important contribution contribution to the protection of the environment. For some, like Ms. Saxe, the Inco judgement shows the government is beginning to get tough bn environmental environmental polluters. Although anti-pollution equipment is expensive, expensive, she believes that corporations need to know that failure to conform conform to government regulations can ' land them in court. , Conversely, there are those with a more sceptical view who see Inco and similar Companies as proven polluters. Over 80% of Ontario's sulphur dioxide emissions come from four corporate sources: Inco, Ontario Hydro, Falconbridge and Algoma. Sulphur dioxide mixes with water to produce acid.rain. Acid rain is considered the most serious environmental problem facing facing Canada today. It kills aquatic life, ruins forests, erodes buildings, and causes lung and respiratory problems in humans*. In some areas of eastern Canada is up to 30 times more acidic than "clean rain." Critics of the judgements say the fine was not stiff enough, $80,000 represents a mean percentage of the companies yearly profits and placed alongside the $10 billion that the acid rain clean up in Canada is projected projected to cost, the amount is insignificant; insignificant; Ironically, Roy Ait ken, an Inco vice president, has been travelling the country to tell the Prime Minister, premiers, and business leaders to get serious about saving the environment. He was vice- chairman of the National Task Force on» Environment and Economy which formulated 40 recommendations for government and business to protect the environment environment while sustaining economic growth. Aitken's company will have to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to control the gases emitted by its Sudbury operations. Whether they will do it without litigation and fines remains to be seen; but, in Toronto, residents can be fined $2000 for putting their household garbage out on the wrong night. by Joshua Samuel Can you get AIDS from sharing a needle while doing drugs?
