4-()rono Weekly limes, Wednesday, February 1, 1989 YpoTTs Orono Novice lose two on the week-end Orono faced a fine tuned Ops Club losing 4-3. Orono boys were astonished from the playmaking, skating and shooting from the Ops' team. Orono went ahead first, then Ops scored three unanswered goals. Ops scored their fourth goal in the third period with Orono scoring two more coming short with a loss. Orono pulled their goalie with Orono team hitting the post in the last few seconds. Goal scorers: Scott MacDonald, assistd by Danny Buttigieg; Scott MacDonald, assisted by Bret Maartense and BJ. Hacked ; Ryan Winning, assisted -by Scott MacDonald MacDonald and Brett Maartense. Orono travelled to Omemee Sunday Sunday night coming up short with a 2-1 loss. Omemee started off with 2 quick goals in the first period. Orono scored their one and only goal in the second period, scored by Scott MacDonald assisted by Ryan Winning ànd Danny Buttigieg. Coach Sawyer found the boys disheartened after losing the game, but the young Orono players must learn that when a team loses in any sport that all players are to blame for the loss not just one or two players. Brett Maartense would probably have been number one star picked as he put his strongest performance in of the year. Orono's next game is against Lindsay, Friday, February 3rd in Orono at 7:15 p.m. Orono OMHA Atoms action update On Sunday, January 29, 1989 oui "Majors" squad proceeded to Omemee to complete the last of a home and home series with that aggressive aggressive squad. Once again sickness and injuries have plagued the members with our star defenseman Stephen Bonneau out sick and winger Jonathan Noble still on the disabled list. Another- winger, Jeff Gates decided to head for Florida for a changé of pace. The delay to start the game on time and the short list of players seemed to combine to catch our boys off their guard and Omemee was able to score 5 unanswered goals in the first period. Our lads settled down and slowed the onslaught but by now the con fidence of a large lead gave the momentum to Omemee and 4 more goals materialized. Coach Pete Landers, must have had a talk'with the defense because from 4:45 of the second period our boys tightened up the play and with some hard work on the part of everyone we got some very good chances to score plus kept the other time from adding to their lead. The final score of 9 to 0 was hot indicative indicative of the game itself as the last 14:45 minutes were scoreless. We already look forward to a much better game on Tuesday at Orono where we meet Little Britain. Come on out fans, support your home team. Next home game, Thursday, l ebruary 2nd at 9:30 p.nr., Newcas- This past Friday evening the Orono Tykes hosted Newcastle and the boys had another close contest but lost by a 6-4 score. This game we had a near full squad as well with just Clint Hawkshaw still down with the flu. Newcastle has a strong team and they are always a good match for us. This game they showed us in a hurry that they had come to play hockey. Newcastle's Nicholas Stacey scored first early in the opening opening period and had scored twice more before the period ended. Orono started the second period , behind the eight ball but when Kyle Seacock scored early in the period it looked like we might be on our way to getting back into the game. Assisting on the play, were Alan Robb and Michael Gibson. The rest of the period was very closely matched matched but late in the period Nicholas Stacey scored his fourth to put Newcastle up 4-1. The third period was the exciting one for those who like to see goals. Orono showed they were not giving up as Bobby Witheridge hit his mark on a pass from Andrew Reid. The teams traded goal for goal as Newcastle's Craig Harness scored followed by Orono's Bobby Witheridge on a pass from Kyle Beacock. Then Newcastle replied again with a second goal from Craig Harness. Orono closed out the scoring scoring and the period with a goal from Alan Robb unassisted with just 30 seconds remaining. Orono won the third period scoring race 3-2 but had to hand the game victory to Newcastle, final score 6-4. The second game of the weekend saw us guests of Bowmanville on Sunday afternoon. Our Tykes ended ended up on the winning side of this encounter. encounter. Orono did all the scoring in the first period. Andrew Reid started the scoring on a rebound from Alan Robbs shot. Murphy Irvine Irvine closed out the period on an unassisted drive down the ice. The second period was scoreless but not without its moments. Both teams had good scoring chances and received excellent goaltending. Orono's Jamie Parry played a strong game and made some excellent excellent saves to keep Bowmanville off the scoreboard. The boys were looking for the man in the clear and made several good passing plays. The line of Tyler Robinson, Andrew Andrew Beacock and Jonathan Black were awesome. But the line of Kevin Copping, Michael Gibson and Clint Hawkshaw were not about to be out done either. Kyle Beacock pulled up the slack on the forward lines and it was not due to lack of desire that kept him off the scoreboard. The defense were doing their job well also. Their passing plays and good positional hockey deserve honorable mention. Good work to Bobby Witheridge and Murphy Irvine, Alan Robb and Andrew Andrew Reid. The third period again was closely closely matched as the two teams both came up with a goal. Orono's An- Come out and support your team tie Arena. Please come and give the boys your support - they appreciate it. "Newcastle vs Beaverton" drew Reid scored first on a perfect pass from behind the net from Alan Robb. Bowmanville closed the periods scoring ending the game in a 3-1 win for Orono. Congratulations boys on a weekend of good hockey. Let's keep up the good work to help prepare us for another busy weekend coming up. Next game Friday Friday at 6:15 against Bowmanville and then let's not forget the Grafton Grafton Tournament on Sunday, first game 12:00 noon. Till then keep your sticks on the ice and your heads up.
