Reaching into the soapy water with an old clay pipe and creating a wonderous bubble bubble which would float toward the heavens before its brief life span ended suddenly and silently, leaving no trace that it had ever existed at all? As children, we didn't mind. There was always another bubble to blow in the instinctive creativity known as play. For those who choose wisely the same spirit prevails as we grow older and the same instinct becomes known as work. Jamie Sherman likely blew bubbles bubbles as a child. Now he blows glass in his snug studio on the outskirts of Bracebridgc. But there the comparison comparison ends. His instincts evolved into the intensity, intensity, concentration, skill and intuitive intuitive creativity of the artist engaged engaged in the ancient art of glassblow ing. We watched as the tall lean, bearded artisan pushed the glass blowers' rod into a furnace containing containing a molten brew of alchemist's chemicals needed to make good glass - a fiery mass in the furnace that rivaled Dante' Inferno. The temperature was 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit ! When he pulled out the rod he rolled around the hot glass it had collected like liquid honey on a spoon. He blew briefly on the rod and the hot golden fluid expanded slightly. He worked quickly in the various stages of blowing, swinging to cool it and shaping. He had to. After eight years of glassblowing he knew what could go wrong. Forty per cent of the glass he works with ends up in the recycling bin. It's a tricky process. Perhaps that's one reason why there are only twenty full-time glassblowers jn the whole.country. Jamie has an interesting background. He's of the Sherman family, well known in the steel industry. industry. His great grandfather was a foundry worker in New York state. In 1912 two of his sons started what is now Dofasco in Hamilton, and Jamie's father is Chairman of the Board. 1 asked if any pressure had been put on him lo go into the family family business. "Absolutely none", he said, "and I'm grateful for that. I was allowed to follow my own leanings , which turned to music at first. Then ( ten years ago 1 began dabbling in glassblowing and it seemed to take over." He's been extremely successful in the field and has won various . awards. The gallery in his studio is ' fitted with shimmering vases and bowls. Their fluid elegance with swirling edges and coloftr depths is everywhere. Although the' family steel heritage didn't appeal to Sherman, he didn't forsake it completely. As he puts it, he still works in a molten medium.
