He sâid that even -with waiving a full assessment environmental hearing hearing the service could not now be completed in 1991 as predicted by the Premier of Ontario, David Peterson in 1985. Durham Board of Ed. and teachers ratify contract The Durham Board of Education and secondary teachers have ratified a two year contract with a 4.85 increase in the first ; year retroactive to September 1988 and 4.95 percent for the second year. The board is also to hire an additional additional 45 teachers to reduce class; sizes. By 1990 a teacher will earn from $27,202 to $56,275 with principals ranging from $68,393 to $74,761. Whitby increases salaries for councillors and mayor Salary increases of almost 30 percent percent were approved by Whitby councillors. Wages for councillors rise from a present $10,050 to $13,000 and for the Mayor up to $35,000 from a present figure of $29,080. New industry to settle in Co bourg NEI Ferranti-Packard Electronics Electronics .has confirmed that it plans to locate a new plant in Cobourg of. 45,000 square feet with construction construction to start immediately. The company is expanding its, opération due to export throughout the world. Local growers to help fight taxation A group fighting for government compensation to cover losses suffered suffered from "discriminatory taxation" taxation" of the tobacco industry is gaining support from area tobacco growers across the province. Farmers are being asked for $200.00 for legal fees to help fight the increased taxation. BUI Adams, a local tobacco grower, states it may cost more than the $200 in the end. "But we have everything to gain and nothing to lose." Arbor Theatre to begin second decade of plays The Arbor Theatre in Peterborough Peterborough has announced its schedule of plays for 1989. The group of plays include, "Educating Rita", "Gaslight",- "My Darling Judith" and closing with "Mrs. Warren's Profession"'. Proposed taxation upsetting cable service The owner of Northumberland Cable TV says a move to force cable television to pay a new municipal - tax is misguided and unreasonable. Cable companies now pay an 8 percent' provincial tax, 10 percent federal tax along with municipal business and realty tax. Some also pay a right-a-way tax. Municipalities are proposing a further ten percent tax. A half-loaf for Orono fence Year after year the Regional Public Works includes a cost for a fence to be installed around their public works yard in north Orono. Year after year this cost is eliminated during budget discus sions. Public Works has again called for an expenditure of $42,200 but which was reduced to $22,600 by the committee which would start the work if it remains in the budget. Hampton Community Association looking for support The future operation of the Hampton Hall at the former municipal building in Hampton is in doubt at the present time. The hall board is looking for members to assist with the operation. operation. Turn-out for meetings has been a way down in recent years. Spindler's body found in the GUnaraska The body of Terry Spindler, 21, was found last week in "a grove of pine trees just off Mercer Road north of Kendal. Spindler had been abducted in Oshawa on Boxing Day and since disappeared. The body was found due to an anonymous call to police as to the location of the body. Two charges for murder have been laid along with five charges of abduction. Million dollar blaze at Cullen Gardens Fire last Thursday destroyed the Park and Village Restaurant and a gift shop at Cullen Gardens in Whitby, a major tourist attraction in the Region. The Garden Gate Restaurant was saved. Damage has been estimated at one million dollars. The Cullen Barn at Kennedy and Steeles in Toronto was also a million dollar loss last October. Cullen said it should be business as usual come April when the gardens open again, Meningitis outbreak in the district Ten confirmed or suspected cases of meningitis have been discovered in the Peterborough and Victoria Counties over the past week. The death of a 10 year old girl from Bethany has been reported. One confirmed case of meningitis was reported of students at M.J. Hobbs Senior Public School. Some 600 students 1 attending the Grandview school were given preventative medicine at a special' clinic over the week-end. Lunch plan needs a second kitchen Phyllis Fenton who intended to have a lunch-time catering service in operation in Hope Township and Port Hope starting on Valentine's day has had to postpone .aie opening opening of the service. Mayors claim economic department of favouring the south big centres 'The Mayors of Newcastle, Brock, Uxbridge and Scugog feel that their . municipalities are being ignored by the Regional Economic Development Development department. Mayor Hubbard said her municipality doesn't feel the presence of the department as much as it should. She said it may be time for the local municipalities to look after their own development of economics. Cobourg and Peterborough police have assigned men to work on the investigation full time. 911 system expected later this year The emergency 911 system is expected expected to be in operation in both Port Hope and Cobourg near the end. of 1989.
