Letter to Editor Dear Sir: Quite often things occur in the community that tend to make one's blood boil, and all to often people think about writing to their local newspaper to let off steam only to change their mind when the effort demands putting pen to paper. Since I am sure that my feelings reflect those of others in our community community I have decided to take the time to write to you irt the hope that you will have space for them in your newspaper. Before purchasing a home common-sense dictates that great care must be taken in it's selection because of the ultimate investment of one's earnings involved. Perhaps the most important aspect the potential buyer looks at is the zoning zoning in place for the area, and also that of the abutting area. When purchasing a home situated in an area zoned residential a person has the right to assume that particular zoning will be upheld by the municipal council of the day in accordance accordance with it's official plan. I would think that such a presumption presumption would appear to most fair minded people as being very reasonable, and expected, to insure the continued preservation of the home's re-sale value. I would also expect that the people elected to municipal office should likewise not only respect the position of the electors electors that they were chosen to "SERVE" but also respect the zoning zoning according to the Official Plan. The recent debate at the General Purpose and Administration Committee Committee concerning an attempt to rezone rezone a residential area to commercial commercial which was supported by Councillor Councillor Stapleton by a vote, and supported supported also by Chairman Hamre, appears to me to be not only an attempt attempt to undermine the authority of the Director of Planning, in his interpretation interpretation of the Official plan, but also, perhaps even more diabolical, the betrayal of trust all homeowners in Orono have in the zoning by-laws. When the government government of the day introduced three year terms of office for municipal councils in lieu of thé two year term, I maintained at that time that such a move was "bad news" for the electorate. Three year terms and "acclamations" in Ward 3 have only only added emphasis to that belief. Yours very truly, Gordon Mills Letter to Editor: Our milk and honey not for sale There is currently much local concern regarding the proposed developments in the Kendal area. 1 think it's important that we, as a community, have a clear understanding of just how we would like to see our area develop. From this perspective perhaps we can set some goafs, do some research, and get on with it. Let's assume that development will happen. Any other view must be seen as primarily naive and secondarily dangerous, as it provides provides no avenue for planned protection. protection. > Let's assume that all of us value our heritage, honour our roots, and love our planet. Let's be clear about the fact that we live in a portion of the world sought after by many. Southern Ontario is the land of milk and honev . Our area east of Toronto is populating itself in direct proportion proportion to the popularity of this dear and revered Canadian land. People are moving east. We can't stem the tide. But we can, and we '-must become the decision-making body which gives direction to this tide. It need not overwhelm us; and we will not allow it to drown us. To this end we cannot rely on elected council, council, conservation authorities, or any other groups who have a multitude of problems on their minds. They will welcome our intervention, if only because it frees them up from some of the responsibility, and they also need to know exactly how we feel. I would favour putting an immediate immediate hold on all applications for development which endanger in any way the natural course of water. Our milk, honey and WATER are not for sale.
