Happy Birthday Remember When? Residential at Mosport Track ruled out (Continued from page 1) track and that further recreational development would increase tourist dollars to the area. The Regional Development and Economic department gave their blessing to 1 the proposal. Kamin asked council members to consider the application of recfea- • tional development and seasonal housing as one application. He said the two were associated to the whole of the project. Kamin said the project would cost s6me $33.5 million and that most of this money would be spent in the municipality, 90 percent. The proposal, he said, was. a stimulant to tourism in the Town, would add employment opportunities and would enhance the Park itself. The Town received 189 letters of objection to the proposal. Ken Smith speaking at the meeting said Mosport should never have been allowed to be located in «the area in the first place. He said as far as the residential unit proposal, it would be 174 today and 5000 next ' week. » J. Schmegener, and area farmer, said Mosport was already, a nuisance and he has been troubled with trespassing and litter. Town committee denied the residential portion of the application application has given approval to the recreational aspect of the plan. Considering lakèfront plans (Continued from page 1) for public use. The Town is being asked for direction as to a course to follow but in the meantime further information information is being assembled. The Town has received a report prepared by Gerard Gervais of the firm Maxion Corporation, which with a report from the Conservation Conservation Authority has provided the Town with the two alternatives. Council members meet with Gerard Gervais on Monday in their camera meeting. Estate residential plan referred (Continued from page 1) but also said he was disappointed with the Ganaraska in that .they had no objections to the proposal. He said the Authority mandate only dealt with the area of the flood and fill lines but that there were certainly certainly other areas of environmental concerns to be considered. He said he wished to submit an analogy between that of his arm and fingers and that of the Ganaraska River and its source ' areas. He said his arm served as little little purpose without his fingers and such would be the case with the Ganaraska without its source areas. He said it was vital to maintain the source areas, wetlands, swales, marshes, marshes, for the survival of the Ganaraska. These areas he said must not be eliminated through development. In also speaking of well, water supply he said it was not an unending unending supply of water from the centre centre of the earth. Rather he said it was seepage from the wet areas into the land and the aquifier and that this process was a continual cycle. He said council was the last line of defense for the environment no matter what recommendation from the Authority or of the Ministries. "You have the final say", he said, "it's your decision as to the future health of the environment in this municipality". Barry Walters, speaking on behalf <T the proponent, stated that All are part of the problem Reading the Port Hope Guide the forepart of the week we came across a report in which the Wesleyville Womens' Institute had donated a sum of $25.00 for the purchase of one acre of land in Brazil. This $25.00 donation is to save one acre of Rain Forests in Brazil. Jack Goering, a naturalist from Port Hope, spoke at the meeting, outlining the destruction of the rain forest in Central America and especially Brazil. He outlined the major debt facing the country and the employment problems. The rain forest are now one of the natural assets being destroyed to meet the demands of the debt and to provide employment. The rain forest plays a large part in the ecological system of not only that country but all of the world. It was pointed out that mahogany lumber was reaching Canada and selling at a price less than native Canadian white pine. From our own experience at the Orono Times we have realized for the past couple of years that we are part of the problem and do take advantage advantage of a price difference in copy paper between that of paper made in Canada and paper made in Brazil. The difference is quite substantial. substantial. Some years back it came to our sion at a meeting last week at the Clarke High school. The panel discussion was sponsored by the Parent-Teacher Liaison Committee. Committee. The event attracted a good attendance. attendance. Mayor Hubbard in addressing the meeting spoke on development in all phases stating the growth process process was evolutionary and that we are part of it - have some responsibility responsibility for it - and will be affected and changed by it. She said we would be naive if we thought <ve could stop its momentum. She noted that land, developers were assembling large tracts of land and that now we must ask ourselves "What sort of community do we want". She said it was her opinion that it his letter reached most of the concerns concerns which had been outlined. He also said that 350 signatures of objection objection from the Ski Club was not significant with a membership of 5000 . . . "and who signed the petition?," petition?," he asked. He said close neighbours had been contacted and only one was opposed to the application. He also noted that there was no objection to noise or the lights from those contacted contacted and who live in the immediate immediate area of the ski hill. Walters also said it was not the intent of the proponent to change the environment and that in fact it would be protected. In speaking of a wetland area he suggest it be given some form of designation to give it protection. Walters asked council members to judge the application on its own merits and that any concern would be addressed before site plan approval. approval. attention that we were losing out in quotations of printing. At the time we were unaware of cheap paper coming into the country for it was not listed in any of the price lists but was available. It was a fact at that time that U.S. paper was coming in at a cheaper rate than Canadian products products even with the dollar difference. difference. Then it was paper from Central America and even a cheaper rate. It so happens at the present time , that copy paper from Brazil lands on our floor at $6.50 for 1000 sheets, 8 l/2x 11 inches. The price for a similar paper made in Canada and landing on our floor could range from $9.75 and upwards. Its at least a fifty percent difference. Its the old story - to stay competitive competitive we must use it. But we do become part of (he problem of destruction of the rain forests in Brazil even though we almost live on the other side of the globe. One has to feel helpless but it is an example that to-day we live in a global society with an ever increasing increasing demand for those things that nature provides in one form or another.. The use continues to outstrip the reproductive ability of nature for those things that survival of a balanced ecological system requires. requires. No doubt we are all part, of the problem in one way or another. touched on a number of challenges ahead. She noted the widening of Highway 401 and a system of study for Highway 407 with a nbrth-south connector on the east side of Cour- tice. She said land selection will Mail in the next couple <>l years. She said the Town is examining, future needs for industrial land and possible servicing of such lands south in Courtice'. She noted a push for commercial lands in the west of Bowman ville. "It is important that our citizens have access to important commercial commercial services. Mayor Hubbard spoke of the essential element of aggregate production in the municipality and that citizen development will be sought as in other future concerns. In speaking of rural residential growth she said that everyone seems to be seeking a rural living environment. environment. She said the town seems to offer the ideal setting for many. Mayor Hubbard spoke of being prepared for development and that the town planning policies were some 10 years out of date. "I'm pleased to announce that we have taken steps to broaden our professional staff resources to deal with complex planning problems," stated the Mayor. She said it was time to be pro-active. She also said it may be time to slow down residential growth to enable the time to take inventory Of all aspects of the Town. ' Mayor Hubbard said, "I want to inform you tonight that council has passed a motion to request the Region of Durham to implement a major study of the Ganaraska area before further ■ development applications applications are processed". She said it was impoprtant for the town and important for thos# in attendance to-night. Frank Wu, diretor of planning for the Town of Newcastle, outlined outlined the process of planning in all its aspects for the audience both at the Town level and at the Regional level., i John Stephenson, representing the Board of Education, informed the meeting that the Board would be considering renovations to the existing public school in Newcastle Village.
