On Sunday, February 19th over 60 members and friends of Kendal L.O.L., L.O.B.A. and J.O.A. took part in boXvling at the lanes in Bowmanville, the men challenged the ladies. Don't know how they did it but the men were the overall winners, following the games, all returned to the hall for supper and a social time. Trophies were presented to the men's high triple and single, and to the ladies' high triple and single winners. A plaque will hang on the wall saying the men won, but watch out next time,'the women may show you how you really should bowl. Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, February 22, 1989-7 9th Annual Kidney Foundation Dance Sizeable funding increases asked The Operations and Finance committee of the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education are hearing requests for increased funding from the principals of both elementary and secondary schools. The elementary principals are asking that the committee recom- - mend an increase to $198,600 from the 1987-88 figure of $108,600. The money, it has been stated, is needed for 1269 desks and chairs, 34 tapes recorders, 22 record players, 16 " video cassette recorders, 12 projectors projectors and nine television sets. They also request additional office equipment equipment and furniture. The elementary principals also request request an increase to the school 'base' budgets from $91.80 to $105.29 per student. These funds are for textbooks, papers and art supplies. The secondary principals are also asking for a considerable increase in funding amounting to 12.4 percent. They state that it is a necessary increase increase to override pressures which the secondary schools must deal with in order to continue to provide "a quality education. It is noted that the local secondary secondary schools are in competition with alternative boards of education education for student enrolment. This in turn forces an increase in public relations and marketing costs. Inflation Inflation and the high cost of special education classes is also noted as a need for greater funding. International plowing match The Ontario Plowmen's Association Association has approved plans for the 1992 International Plowing Match which will be held in the .Lindsay area. Some 150,000 attended the most recent International Match. The Durham Region Plowmens' Association had made a bi'd for the match which they had proposed would be held on sonie 900 acres in the Sunderland area. The 9th Annual Kidney Foundation Foundation Dance will be held at the Newcastle Community Hall, Mill St. on March 4th from 8:30 p.m, to 1:00 a.m . The dance is sponsored by the Ransberry family in conjunction conjunction with the Durham unit of the Toronto and District Kidney Foundation.. Foundation.. The Durham unit serves Orono. The Tradesmen, a 5 piece country ban will provide the music. Entertainment Entertainment includes square dancing directed by Harold (Mac) Ransberry. Tickets are $15 a couple and will be available at the door. The Ransberrys have been members of the Kidney Foundation for 21 years. In 1968, Don Ransberry underwent a transplant and is now one of the worlds longest surviving transplant pa tients, All proceeds from the dance goes to research into Kidney disease. Orono residents are reminded that March is Kidney Month across Canada. The Ransberry family encourages encourages everyone to contribute to the fundraising campaign.
