4-Oroho Weekly Times, Wednesday, March 1, 1989 SPO R TS Orono Atoms win, tie, then lose On Tuesday, February 14, Orono Atoms unpacked their jets and their hustle in tying Pickering 2-2. The score was 0-0 at the end of the first period. At 4:44 of the second period Pickering popped the first goal of the game. Shortly after that Jamie Shetler swept around the Pickering net and tucked the puck neatly in the corner of the goal. About 2 minutes later Steve Bonneau came blazing up the ice and whacked home a hard shot in the upper corner corner of the net. Orono maintained their lead until, with 4:00 minutes left in the game,-an untimely penalty penalty allowed Pickering a power play goal. The following Saturday Orono played against the top-ranked Millbrook team, and lost 6-0. Overall Orono worked and skated hard but were just no match for the Millbrook horses. Jeff Parry played an exceptional game in net. He seemed to stop shots while standing on his head. After this game Orono heads into the consolation playoffs. Good luck to all of them! On Friday, February 24th after a long drought, Orono Atoms won a game! Orono dubbed Stouffville 6-2 in a most impressive win. Orono jumped out to quick lead at 5:50 of the first period. Jamie Shetler scored that goal on a very pretty unassisted play. Next Jonathan Burnham scored at 6:50 of the second second period assisted by Steve Bonneau Bonneau and Jason Lawrence. Orono's third goal came on a slick pass from Jonathan Noble to Steve Bonneau. A very pretty play indeed. At this point the flood gates were opened and Orono their scorers have found the mark zoomed to victory. Jamie Shetler got two more goals giving him a 'hattrick* for t.he night, while Steve bonneau counted the other goal. Jason Lawrence, Jeff Good- murphy and Scott Ransberry got assists on these goals. Wade Peacock, Simon Weagant and Jeff Gates played well on defence. Simon Weagant in particular particular 'stopped several 'near' breakaways showing outstanding speed. Dan Rowe played his usual solid game on defence as well. Another very positive aspect of this game was the team passing which was excellent. The boys have suddenly developed the ability to find the open man with a pass. This unselfish style of play was rewarded tonight and will again be rewarded on future nights. All in all this was an outstanding effort for the Atom team.
