As long as I ean remember, the Orange Hall, has stood where it is presently located, but I know from what my grandfather and others have told me, that at one time there were two lodges in the Kendal area. The first was called, Enniskillen Lodge 405, and the Hall was located on what is now the Boyd property north of the eighth line, this hall was located about where their driveway is how. It was moved to the south end of their property about opposite the old MacLean School, because of the sand shifting south. This Lodge was started in 1845, in 1878 the Hall was moved to the south east corner opposite the MacLeans Cemetery, the Lodge was active until 1927. The Kendal Lodge was formed in March 1858, and met in members homes, on February 10th 1881, they bought the New Connextion Church building, at the present location. In 1927, the 2 Lodges amalgamated, the number was taken from the back Lodge and added added to Kendal, and the Lodge became, Kendal Loyal Orange Lodge 405. The Hall to the north was brought to Kendal and now forms the stage part of the present Hall. Many of the old family names can be found on the old membership membership rolls. Next to the Church, it was the centre of activity. There has been a Fife and Drum band, as long as many can remember and to the present time it is one of the few of its kind left, that is still active and takes part in the parades, including other events outside the Orange Order. At one time, concerts, dances, were held in the hall, unfortunately due to the cost of hiring musicians and the number of people, that the hall can hold, there are ho more dances, but many of you will remember the good times you had. Now the hall is used for Lodge Meetings, suppers, it is used for elections, Local Meetings, such as showers, the tobacco-growers, Penny Penny Sales, Bazaars and such. Of course the bi-weekly euchre is looked looked forward to by many, and is always well attended. I remember when I was small and at my grandfathers, being taken up to the hall tô a concert, and going with him, when he went up to clean the lamp chimneys and fill the lamps with oil, fill the wood stoves and start them, so that the hall, would be warm for their meeting, he would bring water from the well at Mr. Hoys, behind the hall, for their tea, after the meeting. I also remember, running up to the front street to watch and listen to the band, practising their music and marching, how good it sounded. I was not around Kendal for some time, but when I returned to the area,, it was good to see that unlike many halls, it was still in use and not all boarded up or torn down like so many you see throughout the countryside. It may not have all the modem conveniences, conveniences, drafty at times, inconvenient inconvenient when it is time to clean up after a supper, but it is good for all of us to be able to experience what our ancestors did, when they were active in this hall, and were such a profound influence on the lives of all in the area, whether a member of the Order or not, no one was left untouched by these people in one way or another. At present there are four branches branches of the Orange Order, using this old Hall, for their meetings. The men of Kendal Loyal Orange Lodge (L.O.L.) 405. Kendal Hills Ladies Orange Benevolent Association (L.O.B.A.) 1420 and the youth attend attend Brooks Memorial Junior Orange Association (J.O.A.). The men also meet four times a year and hold their Scarlett meeting, this includes includes members from other Lodges. Keep an eye open on your newspapers for any functions that are being held at this hall and plan to attend and step back a few days into the past, you will enjoy it.
