Heritage '89 has, as its goal, the bringing together of various communities communities making up the Town of Newcastle. It's an opportunity to renew old acquaintances and meet new neighbours while participating in a wide variety of special events taking place across the municipali ty. "Just a few of our Heritage '89 events include a parade, a concert, a flea market, a barbeque and a pancake pancake breakfast," said Fleurette Simmonds, Chairperson of the Heritage '89 Committee. She notes that about a dozen events are already part of the Heritage '89 schedule. More will be added to the line-up as details are finalized. Happenings .... VIEWER'S CHOICE TO RELOCATE With the purchase of the building formerly occupied by the Liquor Store, Jack Parry of Viewer's Choice, will be mo'Ang his operation to this new location in Downtown Orono. Although Parry was not available for comment we understand some additions are to be made following a move in June of this year. TOWN HALL EUCHRE RESULTS The Orono Town Hall Euchre results for March 1,1989 are as follows: High scores fbr the evening were Jack Goodman with 81; Harold Allen, Norma Moffat and.Laurena Bright each wit!} 77, Chas Campbell, Olive Little and Morleÿ McAllister each'with 75. Low score for the evening was Myrtle Alldred. Winners of the draw were Mary Thompson, Ethel Goble, Joyce Go wan, Dora MacDonald and Eddy Couroux. ANOTHER GUESS THE HEARTS WINNER Winners of the hearts contest at Wendy B's Department Store were Ken and Linda Dibartolomeo who guessed 500 hearts. BOWMANVILLE LIBRARY WITH MORE PROGRAMS The Bowmanville Branch of thp Newcastle Public Library is holding various programs for the week of March 13th which include live shows for children, films, puppet shows and magic shows. Registration for spring programs including Fitness Classes, with the Y.W.C.A. for the public begins Thursday, March 9th from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Y.W.C.A. Office, 133 Church Street, Bowmanville and continues until all classes are filled. There will also be a special registration held Friday, March 10th from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Bowmanville Mall. One of the schools' projects has been the development of a Heritage Week flag based on designs submitted by area schools, "Heritage '89 will promote the various regions within the municipality and show how diversified diversified we really are. Our objective is to tell the world about our town -- about its past, present and future," the chairperson said. The special week will also help boost tourism. Saturday evening, there's a Heritage '89 Gala at the Darlington Sports Centre sponsored by the Hampton Recreation Association. Sunday, May 29, the day begins with a pancake breakfast sponsored by the Brownsdale Community Centre. Later, there will be special events at the Harvey Jackson Memorial Park in Kendal. These include include a parade of classic cars and a ball game. On Monday, May 29, everyone's invited to an evening open'house for seniors at Forestree Place, in Bowmanville. Wednesday, May 31, marks Par- (Continued page 3) Seek information on local sewage system The Orono Downtown Business Association held a well attended' meeting recently when during the evening some debate centred on the need for some form of sewage treatment treatment for the downtown area. Kay Lycett presented a petition calling upon the Town of Newcastle to seek information through the Region of Durham for a possible solution to a downtown sewage problem. problem. Lycett felt it would be informative informative to know what might be done as to this matter and having some idea of the cost. The association is also asking the Town to consider the proposals put forward by Procter Redfern in the Orono Hamlet plan as they relate to parking in the downtown area. The areas which the association is asking consideration is the moving of parking on Chruch Street to the east side of the street for a gain of seven parking spaces. Allan competed against speaker from all public schools in. the area. Allan is congratulated by his principal, Bruce Lush. Allen's speech will appear in next week's issue of the Times.
