Orono was faced with a high flying excited Millbrook team, where they through the Orono team completely off in positional play, skating and passing. Millbrook scored first never looking back winning the game 3-2. Orono's two goals were scored by: Ryan Winning, assists to B.J. Hackett and Grant Ester and Scott MacDonald assisted by Brett Maartense and Devon Witheridge. Chris Mumby put in a very strong game on defense. This ends the year for the Rocking Rocking Roughlies. The boys will finish off March with exhibition games. Orono Figure Skating Club News Report by Lynne Lemieux March is here and with that the skating season is quickly drawing to a close. The regular skating schedule for all groups will finish on March 9th. On Monday, March 13th the club will start carnival practises. A schedule has been made up and will be posted on the bulletin board in the arena lobby. Please check to see what group your child is in and their 'practise time*. It is most important that every child at- tehds all practises so that the entire group is well prepared for their number. As this year marks the 40th Anniversary Anniversary of the Orono Figure Skating Club, the* carnival theme will be "Let's Celebrate", Carnival day is Saturday, April 8th, with two shows at 1:30 and 7:00 p.m. The carnival committee and club pros have been busy preparing the programme programme and we look forward to another successful carnival. On March 12, the Orono Figure Skating Club will host low test day. Several Orono skaters will be trying tests and we wish them well. The skating club will cater a banquet banquet on Saturday, March 18 as part of our fundraising efforts. Please sign the list on the lobby bulletin board for the area which you wish to help with. From Around the Region Ninth annual of Float Your Fanny The ninth annual Float Your Fanny Down the Gatiny is being held on April 1st, Fool's Day. Some 400 are expected to take part in the event. The numbers have just kept growing since it's inception inception nine year ago. Ask Cobourg to accept Dresler house ownership .The Cobourg Chamber of Commerce Commerce has asked the Town of Cobourg to purchase the Dressier House which was recently damaged by fire. The chamber's Marie Dressier Restoration Foundation expects to raise funds for the purchase and the restoration. it is expected the total cost will run to $400,000 of which thfe .Foundation .Foundation hopes to raise $200,000 and received government grants in^ a similar amount. Rumor of land purchase by Chrysler denied Rumors have been denied by Chrysler Corporation of Canada that they are about to make a significant purchase of land between between Port Hope and Cobourg south of Highway Two. Drug education by police to target children By the end of June Port Hope Police will have in place a drug education program in all schools in the Town for grades 4 to 9. The anti-drug program, over the next ten years, will be bolstered by new projects sponsored by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police. Non-Profit Housing placed on «. list t hree Non Profit Housing pro posals have been placed on a special provincial list which has high hopes for final approval sometime in the near future. The three projects include a 45 unit Port Hope Municipal Non- Profit Housing plan along with two similar projects in Cobourg with 20 and 25 units. Rural Postmaster and Assistants voting Rural Postmasters and Assistants have until Mardi 17th to mark their ballot as to a new contract. The Association has been without a contract contract for two years. The issue has been privatization and franchising of rural post offices. offices. The Post Masters' Association Association claims the new contract is not as good as the former contract as to job security. The Association, however, recommends acceptance of the new contract. The contract affects Post Masters and Assistants in such areas as Orono, Newcastle, Newtonville, Kendal and Potypool. Port Hope sludge keeps piling up For the past three years Port Hope has had to dry sewage sludge and store it on their own property. Prior to this order sludge was used as a fertilizer bn farm lands but it was found to be contaminated with traces of uranium from the Cameco plant-. It cost Port Hope $250,000 to construct a further drying bed last year with Cameco contributing $150,000 of that cost. The Ministry of the Environment is again being asked to free the sludge from having to be stored. The idea was put forward by Ontario Ontario treasurer Robert Nixon who sees such a tax to help offset the cost of additions, renovations and new schools being proposed throughout the province. The local board voted last week in favour of a temporary levy to help offset the funding problem for accommodation for students in Ontario. Ontario. In 1987, the report points out, school boards sought a total of $1.7 billion for new schools and renovations. renovations. The province provided a total of $300,000 for such purposes during during the year. The report said this difference will escalate if some other forms of funding are not soon found. The report also stated that factors factors leading to the crisis included the funding of both public and separate schools, the introduction of junior kindergarten, the call for smaller class sizes, the health of the Ontarib economy which encouraged encouraged immigration to the province and the migration of families from urban urban areas to rural areas where schools do not exist. In a government green paper Nixon Nixon suggested an amendment to the municipal lot levy system which would force municipalities to set levies for a five-year period and allow school boards to charge a builder's tax for educational needs. The Ministry of Education is also considering reducing its contribution contribution to school construction from the present 75 percent allotment to 60 percent to enable it to fund a greater number of projects. Charged with double murder A seventeen year old boy, arrested arrested in Peterborough last Thursday Thursday night, has been charged with two counts of first degree murder. The arrest followed the fatal shooting of two young boys in Campbellcroft on Tuesday. Task Force to start search for site A federal task force is now ready to start it's search for a permanent site for low-level radioactive waste.
