Championship. The first game of the series was played in Orono on Friday Friday night. Orono opened the scoring when Jamie Shetler poked the puck under the Manver's goalie in a goalmouth scramble. Manvers tied the game before the end of the period but Orono struck with two goals in less than one minute of the second. Steve Shetler scored an unassisted goal with a good wrist shot, followed followed by a goal from Jason Mercer with assists from Adam Wallace and Steve Shetler. With only seconds remaining in the period Steve Shetler scored his second of the night to make the score 4-3. Manvers scored the only goal of the third period giving Orono the 4-3 win. March 5, Manvers vs Orono The second game of the series was to be another thriller. Manvers came out flying and scored first but Mike Schoep evened the game when he scored on a pass from Brandon Ovenden. Cameron Tomkins fed a pass to Steven Shetler who made no mistake, leaving the score 2-1 at the end of the period. Each team scored once in the second, second, Orono's goal coming from Jason Mercer with Mike Schoep earning an assist. The third period was hard fought and exciting. Orono had goals from Adam Wallace, Jason Mercer (his second) and Steve Shetler (his second). second). The final score was 6-4 Orono. This was one of Orono's best played games of the year. A real team effort with hard work from every player on the ice. The boys only have to win one more game to earn the Divisional Championship and go on to the finals undefeated. Orono Tykes win "A" championship It was another eventful weekend for our Orono Tykes. First they played a warm-up game against" Bowmanville on Friday evening and then it was off to Baltimore for a day long tournament. First the game vs Bowmanville "Skylight Donuts" on Friday. The Orono squad started in the fashion that seems to have become their trade mark. I'm sure some of the fans were hardly settled into their seats before 1, 2, 3 and already it was a 3-0 score for Bowmanville. To save complete disgrace the boys managed to find the net once before the period ended to close out the first period 3-1 Bowmanville. Scoring Scoring for Orono was Murphy Irvine from Andrew Seacock. It was obvious something had to be done to spark our boys. The present present line shuffled was in order. It worked. The sec.ond period had Orono in complete control and the scoring was all in our favor with two goals. One was by Bobby Witheridge from Murphy Irvine and the other was by Andrew Rêid from Kyle Beacock. The third period was much, closer. Bowmanville scored first to once more take the lead but Orono responded with 3 unanswered goals of their own. Scoring were Murphy Irvine, unassisted; Andrew Reid from Paul Landers and Kevin Copping; Copping; and Andrew Reid unassisted. Then as the final period was drawing drawing to a close Andrew Reid was called called for playing with a broken stick and the man advantage allowed Bowmanville to score and bring ■ them to within one goal of a tie. With just one minute left to play, Bowmanville kept the pressure on but Michael Gibson playing a strong game in goal kept them off the score sheet and Orono came away with a 6-5 victory. Saturday saw the boys in Baltimore at 8:45 a.m. for their first of three games. Their first opponents opponents were Port Hope's "Davidson "Davidson Rubber" team. This was a fairly fairly easily handled team for our squad as they closed the match with 5-0 victory. The first period scoring was done by Andrew Reid, unassisted; Murphy Irvine from Paul Landers and Michael Gibson; and Andrew Reid from Tyler Robinson and Clint Hawkshaw. The second and final period scoring was done by Greg Shetler scoring unassisted, his first of the season on a fine rush at the net cleanly beating the opposing net minder. The final goal was scored by Paul Landers from Andrew Beacock. It was the first goal for Paul this season also. He positioned himself perfectly in front of the net and made no mistake at hitting the mark when Andrew slipped the puck over to him. In their second game the boys were matched against Port Hope's "Local 13173". Oncd more Orono was easily able to handle their opponents opponents and coasted to another 5-0 victory. Scoring in the first period were Andrew Beacock, with his first of the season, deflecting in a shot from Bobby Witheridge and Tyler Robinson; and Bobby Witheridge scoring unassisted. The second period scoring went to Andrew Reid from Kevin Copping; Andrew Reid unassisted; and Murphy Irvine unassisted. Up to this point it had Been something of a slow day for net minder Jamie Parry but he was there when we needed him. Things however were about to change. In game three we were pitted against Bewdley. This was the only team between Orono and the "A" Championship and our boys were more than ready to challenge them for the prize. The game proved to be a real scoring spree as both teams had , several opportunities but Orono made more of theirs count. Scoring in the first period were Bobby Witheridge and Andrew Beacock; Bobby Witheridge unassisted; Bobby Witheridge from Clint Hawkshaw and Tyler Robinson; Robinson; and Andrew Reid from Kevin Copping and Michael Gibson. The scoring was not by any means all Orono however. Bewdley had scored three of their own and the first period ended with Orono up by a 5-3 score. Bewdley have some Orono Atoms extend their unbeaten streak It was a great for fans of the Orono Atoms • Indeed Major's Muffins were in fine form. The week started off with a hard fought 2-1 win over Pickering. Goaltending Goaltending ws dominant in this game with both Orono's Jeff Parry and Pickering's Colin Hunter making numerous tough saves. But as the game went on Orono began to prevail. After falling behind at 6:00 minutes of the first period, Orono behind the leadership of Jason Lawrence came back. With the score tied 1-1 and 39 seconds to go Jason scooped up a blind pass and fired a 'Hail Mary' shot on the Pickering goal. The puck which was dancing like a jumping bean just eluded the Pickering goalie anti Orono had a 2-1 win. Jason Lawrence scored both Orono goals with assists going to Jonathan Noble Noble and Steve Bonneau. The whole team worked hard in this game and all deserve a great deal of credit. On Saturday, Orono travelled to Bowmanville and threw down the gauntlet. It was probably the final time these two teams will meet this season and the 4-4 tie was very fitting. fitting. There were two stars for Orono in this game. Jeff Parry played an outstanding game in goal and kept Orono in the game with a flurry of key saves in each period. Jamie Shetler had what must have been his best game of the season, scoring '3' Orono goals. This game was a profile in courage for Orono. Bowmanville jumped to a fast 3-0 lead. But Orono undaunted kept plugging and skating and finally with a 1:37 left in the final period Steve Bonneau Bonneau scored the equalizer. Assists in this game went to Jonathan Burnham, Burnham, Jason Lawrence, and Jonathan Noble. Oroon Atoms are now 2nd in the winning for the consolation cup. With luck we might win the first trophy of the year. Orono Atoms continue unbeaten streak Orono Atoms continued their unbeaten streak in league play-offs. Last week and this week, Orono played Stouffville to a 3-3 tie, beat Pickering 4-1, and then topped Bowmanville 5-1. The Stouffville game saw Orono start off in shaky fashion. At the end of the first period the score was tied 1-1. Orono's goals were scored by Steve Bonneau on an assist from . Jamie Shetler. Then in the second period Stouffville scored two unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead. However, Orono in a terrific display of character staged a strong comeback, Jamie Shetler notched a goal with 1:45 left in the game, on an assist from . Jason Lawrence. pretty good skaters and the Orono ' boys could not take them for granted. It had really been a fairly wide open game up to this point and out scored their opponents 3-1. Scoring for Orono were Andrew Reid from Paul Landers and Greg Shetler; Murphy Irvine unassisted; and Murphy Irvine from Kyle Beacock and Clint Hawkshaw. The game ended an 8-4 victory for Orono. A special congratulations goes out to Bobby Witheridge chosen the "Most Valuable Player" of the game and to Jam'ie Parry who scored two shut outs and kept Bewdley's scoring to a minimum in the final contest. Congratulations boys on your fine performance and your "A" Championship! You have reaped the reward of your own hard work and dedication. With 31 seconds left in the game Jamie Shetler lead Jason Lawrence with a beautiful pass, Jason made no mistake with this favour and banged the puck behind the Stouffville Stouffville goaltender. Final score Orono 3, Stouffville 3. On Sunday, March 12th, Orono travelled to Pickering. Pickering lead off the scoring' with a goal at 9:59 of the first period. From then on it was 'all Orono', particularly when Pickering changed its goalies. That change caused Pickering's spirit to sag and Orono made no mistake about taking advantage as they scored four unanswered goals to win 4-1. Orono markers were scored by Jeff Gates, Steve Bonneau Bonneau and Jason Lawrence. Assists went to Jamie Shetler, Jonanthan Burnham and Jeff Gates. Dan Rowe and Scott Ransberry turned in strong performances on defense. Monday, March 13th was an unlucky day for Bowmanville who ran into a red-hot goaltender from Orono. Jeff Parry frustrated Bowmanville a number of times as Orono skated to a 5-1 victory. In this game Jamie Shetler and Steve Bonneau did all the scoring for Orono. Jamie Shetler had three goals and Steve Bonneau had two goals. Assists went to Dan Rowe, Simon, Weagant and Tom Wakefiçld.
