O.M.H.A. Atoms news update After soundly defeating Bowmanville Toros 5 to 1 last week, Orono was primed to take game 2 and the consolation championship! However, it was not to be, as the visiting Toros tied the series up with a convincing 7 to 3 win over our guys Thursday night (March 16). Orono was over confident and early in the 2nd frame found themselves down by 4 to 0. At 3:07 of the 2nd however, Jamie Shetler made one of his now familiar end to end rushes and found the mark high to the glove side unassisted. This seemed to annoy Bowmanville a little little bit as they retaliated with 2 more quick goals of their won and added another in the final frame. Jamie Shetler, not to be out done scored 2 more unassisted goals as well to give him the hat trick, but it clearly wasn't enough as Orono was out played and out shot 24 to 6! Credit definitely has to go to goaler Jeff On Friday, March 10th the'» Manvers Pee Wees came to Orono to continue their three out of five series with Orono up two games to none. This evening was Manvers turn to shine. They jumped into a 4-0 lead before Orono got on the board 1 with a shot from Jason Mercer in the second period. In the third period Orono wqke' up and outscored the opposition 4-3 on goals from Jason Mercer, Scott Hentig and Adam Wallace with two. The final score was 7-5 Manvers. This was Orono's first loss of the season and they will have to travel back to Manvers for game four Sunday night. Saturday, March 11th Orono visited Millbrook for their annual March tournament. In the first game Orono was to play Port Perry. This was a very important game coming one day after their only only loss this year. The boys responded responded well a »d trounced Port Perry ( 8-0. Parry for restricting Bowmanville to it's 7 tallies. Game 3 will be played sometime this week at Darlington Darlington Arena. Good Luck Boys! Saturday (March 18) saw Orono host an exhibition game with an O.M.H.A. house league team from Markham. Coaching the team was an ex-Oronite Eric Burton who commented, it was nice to be back "home" again, albeit temporarily of course! These 2 teams seemed to be evenly matched and it was an entertaining game for the parents as well as the players. Fittingly the game ended in a 3-3 tie and hopefully hopefully there will be a return match in Markham in the near future. Scoring Scoring for Orono was Jonathan Burnham Burnham (with a nice shot from just inside inside the blue line)/assisted by Wade Peacock. Jamie Shetler, unassisted and again Jamie Shetler assisted by Jonathan Burnham at 8:16 of the 3rd period. All of the scoring was done in the first and third periods with Jason Mercer leading the way with four goals. Singles went to Brandon Ovenden and Scott Hentig with Mike Schoep netting two. Game two was against a strong and determined team from Lakefield. The first period was end to end with plenty of good hockey but it ended in a' 0-0 tie. Half way through the second Steve Shetler took a pass from Jason Mercer and scored the first goal of the game. Orono finished the scoring in the third period when Jason Mercer tipped in a John But- tigieg shot from the point. Game three pitted Orono against Manvers for the championship. This was to be another of the good games between these two teams. Orono struck with two goals in the first on shots from their two big scorers Jason Mercer and Steven Shetler. The two teams traded goals in the second period with Steve getting his second of the game after being set up by Brandon Ovenden. The third saw Steve complete his hat trick to give Orono a 4-1 lead. Manvers fought back but it was too little too late, leaving Orono with a well deserved 4-3 victory for the championship. Special mention in this tournament tournament goes to Chad Puk in goal and his three defensemen David Crozier, John Buttigieg and Paul Woods. Sunday, March 12th Orono headed headed to Manvers to continue the playoffs, with Orono leading the series two games to one. After all of the close games these two teams have had this was to become a blowout for Orono. Manvers opened opened the scoring after only 45 seconds but that was to be all they would get that night. Orono bounced back with their top scorer Steve Shetler getting two and Cameron Tomkins adding the third. The third period, belonged to smooth skating Brandon Ovenden. He scored three straight goals to give the Kinsmen a 7-1 victory. It was a busy weekend for the Orono team playing five games in three days. They won the Millbrook tournament on Saturday and eliminated Manvers on Sunday. This makes them champions of their division and they will have to wait for the outcome of the Haliburton and Beaverton series before heading north to take on the winner for the Tri-County Cham-' pionship. Game 3 proved to be quite an interesting challenge as they once again met their old nemesis Manvers! It was a real crowd pleaser as Orono squeaked by them 4 to 3 and took the tournament championship.
