Orono Tykes close out 88/89 season The hockey season drew to a dose this past weekend for our Orono Tykes. On Thursday evening, evening, the boys were in Millbrook to take one last shot at their undefeated rivals. Although Orono had several empty sweaters with players away due to holidays and sickness, the spirits were high. We were all confident it Was within our capability to beat Millbrook. The first period action was end to end but close checking kept shots on goal down and both teams off the scoreboard. Things opened up in the second period as Millbrook scored ' two quick'goals. Orono came right back though, with two; goals of their own. Scoring were Alan Robb and Murphy Irvine both unassisted. At , this point in the game, the double Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, March 22, 1989-5 Guest Skaters Who will appear at the Orono Figuré Skating Carnival on April 8, 1989 are 18 year old, Jacqueline Petf Winnipeg, Manitoba and 1? y ear Mark Janoschak front Bramalea, Ontario. Ontario. They were the 1988 Jr. Canadian Canadian Dance Champions; 1988 Grand Prix international de Patinage Artistiqul, St. Gervais, France - Gold Medalists; 1988 Nebehhorn Trophy, Oberstdorf, West Germany - Bronze Medalists; 1988 Moscow News Prize, Lenn- ingrad, U.S.S.R. - 6th Place; 1989 Senior Canadian Dance Championship, Championship, Chicoutime, Quebec - 6th Place. shifting began to take effect on the Orono squad. Despite some excellent excellent goaltending by Jamie Parry, Millbrook scored twice more to end the second period with a 4-2 lead. Some bad breaks for Orono' in the third period put Millbrook up 6-2. As the period drew to a close Andrew Reid scored for Orono unassisted. Final score 6-3 Millbrook. It just wasn't meant to be for Orono to defeat Millbrook this season but there is always next year. Orono may have lost but the boys played an excellent game especially considering they had only 8 skaters. Friday evening was a family fun night as the Tykes challenged their mothers in the annual Mother-Son Game. We watched in awe as the Tykes demonstrated the skills they Had picked up over the season, skating circles around their defenseless mothers. The mothers did touch the puck on a few occasions occasions and even had some pretty good shots on the goal but net minder Jamie Parry was more than a match for them. His mother in goal at the other end of the rink showed signs of fear and near panic as time and time again the tykes would break in and fire at her. What was the final score? Let's just say the Tykes won and in fact, I believe the mothers would have to concede that they had provided Jamie with yet one more shut out. A special thanks to the Moms for being such good sports and to Mini Mouse, the Clown and the Leprechaun who dropped in and helped to make this one of the most entertaining games of the year. The Father/Grandfather-Son game Saturday afternoon also was a huge success. Everyone had a great time and' although the Fathers thought they might show the Tykes a thing or two about the game of hockey, the Tykes put on a good show too. Despite the distractions of the Fathers clown (who was spraying water on the players and spectators and dancing down the ice with the referee) the Tykes were still able to score a few goals and if you were to ask them, they would probably probably tell you they won the game. This ended a fun filled season for the Orono Tykes. All in all they had a very successful year. Out of 33 games their record was 14 wins, 15 losses, and 4 ties. An excellent accomplishment accomplishment considering the caliber of some of the teams they played. Out of four tournaments they entered, they came away with a 'B' Championship; an 'A' Runners Up; and an 'A' Championship. Congratulations to the teams top' scorers; Alan Robb, Murphy Irvine, Irvine, Andrew Reid and rookie of the year Bobby Witheridge. Good Luck to the veterans moving moving on to novice next year: Kyle Beacock, Kevin Copping, Clint Hawkshaw, Murphy Irvine, Alan Robb and Andrew Reid. To this year's rookies Andrew Beacock, Jonathan Black, Michael Gibson, Paul Landers, Jamie Parry, Tyler Robinson, Greg Shetler and Bobby Witheridge, have a good summer and hope we see you all back again next season.
