The Secret Affairs of Mildred Wild Pictured above are Georgina Willis and Randy Alldread. by Jean Sheridan Ever go to a play rehearsal? I know- from experience they can be ■ pretty hair-raising experiences for a director, but so far Pat Rundle has kept her cool. I went to one a couple of weeks ago with my partner in publicity, Pat Marjerrison. Picture the scerie- the back wall of B.H.S. theatre still has that wild juke box from "Grease" staring out in psychedelic colours. And in front of'it bn stage are our actors - George Willis in the role of Mildred, Elizabeth Prower in the role of Mildred's husband Roy (the real Roy, Fred Archibald, is off in Toronto making money having his hands photographed for a commercial). Helene Beauchesne, our faithful assistant stage manager, is following the play closely, every once in a while holding aloft a little brass bell and jingling it (doorbell!). Then from the back of the auditoriums we hear this low throaty laugh. Doug Barber has arrived laden down with sound equipment. The next half hour or so is occupied with trying to gel the dialogue and the TV (Doug, that is ) synchronized. Meanwhile Jan Leak who, with Ellen Logan and Pat Cota are in charge of props, is making sure everything is in order--pots, pans, vibratdr, canary etc. Now Debra Gehring appears. appears. She's looking after makeup and hair. A lively argument ensues as to what colour, style and length Ginger Rogers' hair was (Ginger is sort of in the play too, you see). Barb Tukker and Sheila Majid are there too; they're co-producers and need to keep their fingers in every pie. Doreen assures us that she recites her lines perfectly all through the night, but with the break of dawn they leave her completely. completely. And Lana? Well Lana has very complicated beeper problems. Trish Hill (the num) can't be there so who takes her part? Randy Alldread! Oh well-rehearsals wouldn't be any fun if everything ran smoothly. Be assured, all will be well by April 13, 14, 15. A word about the play itself. "The Secret Affairs of Mildred Wild" is a comedy, but it is not just another silly farce. The author, Paul Zindel, likes to write the kind of play which is hilariously funny on the surface, but which deals with a situation which is essentially a serious one. Another of his plays which fits this description is "And Miss Reardon Drinks a Little" which the B.D.W. produced in 1983. Roy and Mildred Wild rent and operate a candy shop in Greenwich Greenwich Village. The action of the play takes place in the rear room, a sort of bedroom/kitchen. The building is to be demolished and they must vacate in two days. Roy is a well-meaing but rather dull sort of fellow; Mildred is a dreamer. Carroll, the local butcher, helps Mildred escape her humdrum life, but Mildred has many problems, problems, two of whom are Bertha, the landlady, and Helen, her nagging sister-in-law. And that's not all the characters - there's a nun and five other people to complicate the situation. This is the story of what happens in and to Mildred's dreams over a two-day period.
