4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, March 29, 1989 Kinsmen Pee Wees capture championship After Orono won the first game in Beaverton, they came home to play game two. Orono dominated the first and outscored the opposition 2-0. Jason Mercer continued his good play, scoring both goals. Assists went to John Buttigieg and Steve Shetler. In the second period Beaverton played their best period of the series but could not penetrate the Orono defence. Steve Shetler scored his first of the night on a pass from Cameron Tomkins to make the score 3-0 at the end of two. The third saw Orono regain their skating legs and take control of the game. Scott Hentig scored one and Steve Shetler added two. Beaverton got their only goal late in the period to give Orono the 6-1 win. Back to Beaverton for game three the next night and this was to be a very rough game. The first period saw Orono with a slim 1-0 lead on a goal by Jason Mercer assisted by Scott Hentig and Steve stietler. In the middle period, Orono stretched the lead to 2-0 on an unassisted goal by Ca-meron Tomkins. The Orono defence and Chad Puk's goalkeeping was solid in this period frustrating any Beaverton opportunities. Steve Shetler went to work in the third scoring two goals on assists by Scott Hentig and Brandon Ovenden. Final score 4-0 Orono. Orono had game four of the series back home on Wednesday night. It was Beaverton who struck first, but Brandon Ovenden scored a lovely unassisted goal to tie the game. David Crozier made it 2-1. before the period ended with a hard well placed shot from the point. Orono padded the lead to 5-2 by the end of the second with goals by Jason Mercer, Steve Shetler and Cameron Tomkins. By the last period, .Orono was showing their superior skating ability ability and had the game well in hand. Goal scorers were Mike Schoep, Steve Shetler and Brandon Ovenden. This gave the Kinsmen a 8-3 win and the Tri-County Championship. Championship. Special mention in this series to gôalie Chad Puk and his defence, David Crozier, Paul Woods and team captain John But- tigieg. They allowed only four goals in the four game series. Because of holidays Adam Wallace was away for the finals and he was missed. At the end of a very successful season, I would like to take this opportunity opportunity on behalf of all the parents to thank the Kinsmen Club of Orono for their support this year. I also want to thank our excellent excellent coaches: Dean Cox, Dave Shetler and the team manager Bob Tomkins. Orono Atoms finish successful season The Orono Atoms wound up the season in Bowmanville on Monday night losing the best 2 of 3 series - 2 games to one. The score in the final game was 6-2 for Bowmanville. As the saying goes some nights you have it and some nights you don't; well tonight Bowmanville had it as they stifled Orono's main offensive weapon - Jamie Shetler. It seemed that Bowmanville put a man (or maybe a woman) on Jamie all the time he was on the ice. Really it wasn't the fact that Orono played badly but rather Bowmanville was just very hot. The Toros popped in the first 2 goals and never looked back. Steve Bonneau potted Orono's first goal on a lovely breakaway, while Scott Just George writes again Today I really don't have much to write about • which mean (if history repeats itself) that this could well develop into a lengthy epistle. Most days when I'm in the village, ! often meet, see, encounter, or otherwise otherwise become involved with, a well known individual whose opening remark is usually, "when are we going going to get another story"? Being an ex-service man I learned early in life to never "volunteer", however, with my back to the wall (so to speak) I will endeavour to make a "mountain out of a mole hill"? This morning I saw four Robins outside my window, this should tell me spring has sprung, but with the thermometer showing minus 4 degrees celcius, I think they're crazy! ! Like most of you I'm enjoying enjoying this time of year, although we're freezing outside, however the income income tax department is trying even harder to squeeze the last cent we've got out of us. The telephone company company want more more money for the privilege of talking to people less than twenty miles away, and now our old "friends"? The postal service are surfacing again, with their brilliant ideas for upgrading our mail delivery, (I believe this comes under the heading of pragmatism?) I suppose a lot of us stupidly imagined that after a meeting on this subject a couple of years ago, it was all forgotten? But no my friends, it was only sleeping! ! ! I think that's called "being "being lulled into a false sense of security"? Now we don't have to go to our excellent Post Office with its friendly knowledgeable staff, who can, and do answer all our queries, who give us the best service possible, possible, "oh no" we're going to get a nice green box at the side of the road, all to ourselves, with a key to open it. In the Orono Estates where I live, we won't need a key, we'll need a shovel in winter to even reach the damned thing - even then it will probably be frozen shut. Presumably this comes under the heading of "upgrading efficiency"? That's understandable for the they've upgraded everything else, including the price of postage. (But somehow it still takes six days for a letter to reach Bethany from Orono?!! (I can drive there in 30 minutes.) Ah, well, I suppose we can't expect miracles!! To change the subject (thankfully), (thankfully), how was your winter. I know lots of folk who have been south, some who are still there, and some who are going shortly. One family booked to fly on eastern airlines, we're lucky enough to get "most" MacDonald got the second goal firing firing a screamer into the top corner of the net. Orono's most valuable players for the game were Steve Bonneau and goalie Jeff Parry who played a terrific game and was worth at least 4 goals with his play. Excellent defensive performances were turned in by Jeff Goodmurphy, Scott Ransberry and Jeff Gates. Its been a great season for the Atoms, through adversity they did reach the consolation finals of their group. A special note of- thanks to coaches to coaches Gord Burnham and John Lawrence who took over for Gord midway through the season. Thanks also to manager Joe Gates. The hours of personal time donated by these people are appreciated appreciated by players and parents. Thanks as well to Cathy and Jack Parry whose sponsorship made the, consolation finals possible. It was a good year and the boys eagerly await the season's start next September. of their money back, when the company company went bankrupt, but are now forced to drive, (for a seven day vacation!!?), they are welcomed to that adventure. Pm afraid I'm one of the lazy type, whereby a trip to Oshawa requires a week of careful planning, but of course that's an exaggeration, exaggeration, (I've done that trip twice already this month!!!) And so. good friends and neighbours, I told you at the beginning, beginning, I don't have much to tell you this month. (But it's all good stuff, isn't it?) - think how lucky you'll be when I do have something to get my teeth into? Welcome to spring, as usual Just George Oshawa PUCto collect lot levies The Oshawa Public Utilities Commission will begin to collect lot levies from developers to cover electric electric service connection charges in new development. The levies amount to $300 for each new single and semi-detached homes, $290 for each townhouse, $180 per apartment and $7,200 per hectare* for industrial and commercial commercial development. The Town of Newcastle is awaiting a staff report as to the f iossibility of the Town also collec- ing a lot levy for hydro connection. Such funds would be set aside to be used in a possible purchase of rural hydro from Ontario Hydro.
