Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, March 29, 1989-7 From Around the Region Tornadoes topic for lecture series Tornadoes will be the topic for the next Durham Science and Tech oology Series lecture being held on March 29th. Vic Tyrer will describe the similarities and differences between tornadoes, thunder storms, and hurricanes, using examples with which we are all familiar. As well, he will explain what each of us should do when these storms threaten. Vic Tyrer is an instructor/resear- cher - Earth Science, Ontario Science Centre. Maple Syrup Day at Ganaraska Fores Centre The Ganaraska Forest Centre presents its annual Maple Syrup Day on Saturday, April 8th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tour the sugar bush, see Ganaraska Gold being made in the sugar shack along with pancakes, maple syrup and beverage being served at a price of $3.00 for adults and $1.50 for children 12 years and under. Glen Glaspell and Sons Master Breeders The heart of the Canadian Holstein Holstein industry is the breeder. Glen G. Glaspell and Sons of Oshawa have been designated Master Breeders in the industry. A shield presentation will be made at the annual meeting of the Holstein Association of Canada in April. Glen Glaspell's father purchased a heifer calf for him in 1948 and in 1950 Glen began shipping milk with this one cow. He bred this female to calf every eleven months and she always provided the owner with a heifer calf, luckily. Province steps ii 1 \ bans PCB shipment The Ministry of thé Environment has stepped in to prohibit the Town of Port Hope and Cameco to ship tainted oil and decommissioned transformers contaminated with PCBs to be transported to England. It was the intent of Cameco and Port Hope to be destroyed. The decision by the province has puzzled Cameco who will now have to continue storing the Contaminated Contaminated oil and transformers on their property in Port Hope. Separate High Schools get French Immersion The Separate School Trustees have agreed to provide French Immersion Immersion in their secondary schools in both Cobourg and Bowman ville. The decision was made last week. The program will start in Cobourg in 1991 irregardless of numbers. There are some 187 french immersion students in the Cobourg area at the present time with the lead class having an enrolment enrolment of 21 students. This class would be ready for high school in 1991. Job suits George Hees perfectly George Hees, 78, a former MP for Northumberland, states his new job suits him perfectly. He is off to Ghana on May 4th where he will monitor Canadian relief efforts in that northern African country for a two week period. Hees reports directly to the Prime Minister. Oshawa lawyer appointed vice-chairman LLBO Cobourg lawyer David Purvis has been appointed the new vice- chairman of the Liquor Licencing Board of Ontario.
