Total sales for the year reached $3,671 million comparing with $2,695 million in 1987. Peter Wellstood, auditor for the local Co-op, stated the Co-op was in good financial standing. He said that although cost of sales had increased slightly percen tage wise the important feature was an increase in percent in net savings for the year. Net savings for 1988 reached $112,319 (3.1%) comparing comparing with $66,670 (2,5%). It was pointed out that because of an expansion cost of $50,000 there had been a cash reserve reduction but that it was not a problem. He said the fact that the Co-op was self-financing their improvements improvements was good. The Co-op added an additional 24,000 square feet to their retail store in 1988. In speaking with Wayne King, manager, he said the increase in sales was mainly due to the retail store and petroleum products. It was pointed out in the financial statement that 72% of the business was with members of the Co-op. Raymond Nelles, president of (he Norfolk Co-operative in western Ontario was the guest speaker for the evening. He said there was optimism optimism in the agricultural industry for corn and eveîi tobacco and in the dairy and beef industry. He said it is hoped that the plunge in the hog market has now bottomed-out. He complimented the local co-op for their achievement during the past year, "it's yours - use it", he said. The local co-op was celebrating its 41st annual meeting at a ban- quest and annual meeting at the Orono United Church. The meeting recommended a 2 percent dividend on the 1988 business with the exception of petroleum products. Lloyd Skinner and Charlie Harris were new members elected to ,the Board with Brian Caswell returning for another term. Happenings . . . ORONO D.B.I.A. CONSIDER STREET FACADE The Orono Downtown Business Association held their regular monthly meeting last Wednesday when consideration was given to possible improvements to the Street Facade in downtown .Orono. A further meeting is to be held this month in connection with proposal at which further consideration and ideas will be advanced. * It was reported that some 34 artists have been invited to take part in the annuaT Outdoor Art Show and Sale to be held on Saturday, Saturday, May 27th. Other pvents include a pancake breakfast, heritage collection display and sale in the Town Hall, street musicians, Janette Desousa, heritage walking tour, classic cars, children art competition, quilting, wood carving and other features. The event closes with an old-fashioned hoe down in the Town Hall in the evening evening with a box lunch auction. The events are being held in connection with the Newcastle Heritage '89 celebrations.
