Published Every Wednesday - 3 Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, April 19, 1989 Look to Well 2 for water supply so as to expand Orono development An interoffice memorandum within the planning department of the Region of Durham has dealt with future development in Hamp ton and Orono as they relate to water supply. In Hampton the report notes heavy solids with a. high water table and suggest that future development development should require a communal water supply which does not exist at the present time. As to Orono the memorandum notes the construction of Well Number 3 in 1987 providing a supply supply of water for an estimated 1715 persons. At the time of construction of Well 3 the former well Number 2, near the Mill Pond, was closed out other than for supply at peak periods. The report notes that Number 2 well did have an unsatisfactory sodium content and that recharge of the acqifier was dimishing. As a result rehabilitation was undertaken in 1988 to rectify capacity and establish reserve capacity. The memorandum states that if further development was to take place that Well 2 would have to undergo further evaluation during the spring of 1989. The memorandum further states that if capacity in Well 2 is available on a full-time basis residential expansion expansion could be undertaken in the Zone 1 water supply system, an area west of Main Street opposite Millson Hill Drive. Development in Zone 2, an area north of Zone 1 and reaching to Taunton Road would not be permitted permitted since additional pumphouse and water storage would be re- auired. The memorandum states that due ■to the constraints favourable comments comments for Orono and Hampton must be withheld at this time. Happenings ...
