Julius and Cleopatra The Clarke players once again presented entertaining theatre at their annual event at the school. What will happen will happen, but what did happen, "Something Green", was great entertainment for a three night stint at the Clarke High School over the past weekend. Four plays adapted from Michael Green's book, The Art of Coarse Acting, was a celebration of theatre and the many^ many, many things which can go wrong and often do proved another hit by the Clarke High School Drama club. The program defines a Course ac tor as one who can remember the lines but not the order in which they come. Coarse drama is that in which the actor is being himself while the audience is playing a part, pretending to enjoy the show and to laugh at unfunny jokes. It was evident that the audiences did thoroughly enjoy this presentation presentation at Clarke and were left (Continued page 3) its-- Published Every Wednesday Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, May 3, 1989 Town gives approval for Non -profit 61 town house complex The Town of Newcastle General Purpose committee on Monday gave approval by a majority vote for a Durham Region Non-Profit Housing Corporation proposal of a 60-unit Townhouse complex. The complex is to be constructed at the north-west corner of Mearns Avenue and Concession Street. The Town however is to retain a holding symbol on the property until until such time as the site plan is approved. approved. The Non-Profit Housing Corporation first asked for rezoning rezoning of the lands in May of 1988 at which time objections were , registered to the plan by neighbouring neighbouring home owners. On Monday Valerie Cranmer, assistant general manager for the Corporation, spoke of the proposal of the 60 unit town house which is a two-storey structure intended to house a possible 180 to 200 persons. She said the development would contain '19 4-bedroom units, 29 3-bedroom units, 9 2-bedroom units and three handicapped units. She said half the units would be subsidized subsidized while the remainder would be at market value rents. Martin states the plot to be light and heavy but presented in a manner that was not preaching. The audience, in entering the hall, were.surprised to find Joe Boss had been laid to rest in a coffin. They were escorted to the coffin side for their respects. He rose at curtain time dressed somewhat like a clown with baggy pants, a red nose and head gear. No matter where Joe went the name 'Boss' placed him in the position position of authority but not necessarily with the knowledge to carry out his duties. The rezoning application, if approved, approved, will allow the development of 91 single family dwelling in the south-east sector of Newtonville to be serviced by municipal water and private sewer systems. Veltri has yet to submit a plan of , sub-division for the some 78.5 acres. The lands are designated as part of the Hamlet of Newtonville. Oroho Horticultural plant & hobby show A good turnout vyas present at the April 27th meeting, house plant show and hobby and crafts displays of the Orono Horticultural Society. The meeting was opened with the singing of O'Canada accompanied by Mary Caswell at the piano. , President Doreen Lowery welcomed those present and thanked thanked the members for exhibiting in the house plant show and hobby displays. Following the secretary's report and correspondence by Carol Mostert and Treasurer Adele McGill's report, Lorna Atkins outlined the highlights of District 17 Annual Meeting at Brooklin on April 15th. The 1990 meeting is to be held at Beaverton and the Orono Horticultural Society is host to the annual meeting in 1991. Several members were delegated to represent the society at the O.H.A. convention at Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo on June 20-22.
