Tizzard who was loved loved by one and all and had many friends who took his pulpit when he was laid off for many weeks. Then Mrs. L. Down gave the story of Rev. Duncan White's 35 years in the ministry. He is now the United Church minister of Port Hope United Church. His first church after ordination was at a three point charge near Colling wood. The manse had been closed for six months so the church committee asked a plumber to turn on the water. Rev. Mr. White said, "When we arrived we were met by a committee member who took us to the manse and when she opened the door for us water came pouring out the front door." "There was that poor woman standing ankle deep in water, with the new minister and his „ wife standing at the door," White recalled this with a laugh. Rev. White was national director of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand and Australia for four years. Then he returned to Canada. He has been the minister of Port Hope United for the last'five years. The minutes were read by Mrs.. A. Dilts, the treasurer's repdrt given by Mrs. L. Downs. Offering $26.50. Plans were made to serve lunch at the Carscadden Sale and plans were made for our Anniversary Anniversary on Sunday, May 7th. The meeting closed with hymn 550 "Abide with me". A delicious lunch was served by Mrs. Ann Dilts. Our regular meeting day is June 7th when we have our summer outing to Port Hope Legion Hall next month. Should all else fail read the directions. directions. Consider the sad story of Douglas Snell. He joined a funeral procession in his car figuring he could roll through a red light and save time. He got through all right, but when he looked in the rear view mirror he saw a motorcycle policeman in the procession, right behind him. Poor Doug had to stay there all the way to Resthaven Cemetery, eight miles out of his way. From I remember the One Room School Getting There Country Style At eighteen I was very fortunate to be accepted as a teacher because so many experienced teachers were available in those repression years. I was to have 39 pupils in all grades including the first year of High School. • The school was actually only 15 miles from home but for ease of getting there in winter it might as well have been Siberia. 1 left home Monday morning on the 6:30 a.m. train. Soon we passed through a little little village where the train shunted for such a long time that 1 used to be on pins and needles because I was afraid I'd be late for school. Finally we came to the flag station where the train slowed up enough for the conductor to help me off. Then I had a five mile walk to my school. As I began the walk darkness would be giving away to daylight. ' When I looked up the road there might be a track that followed the road at times and at other times went off through fields taking the line of least resistance. Then my five miles turned into six or seven. But in the two years I taught in that school I was late only once. The road I travelled is now a wide country road but at that time it was so narrow 1 could touch the trees on either side. It was not unusual to have a deer spring across the road in front of me. 1 passed through two hardwood bushes and two swamps. These 1 learned to love but n'ot in the first year. 1 heard there were wolves in the neighbourhood! 1 know now that wolves do not at tacit human beings but at eighteen years of age 1 had memories of stories * n the readers telling of fearful, tragedies because of wolves. I asked o ne trustee if there were wolves in the woods and he replied with a sober face. There are plenty in AlgonQuin Park and there's no fence 'around "it". But in my second year 1 walked that road with complete enjoyment and no fear. On Friday night I did the walk in reverse 1 would leave the' school when dark was closing in and 1 would get to the flag station in the dark. The flag station was a little one-room building at the side of the track. Inside was a woodbox full of firewood and a box stove which I never dared light. I'd wait till 8:30 p.m. when a train whistle would tell me it was time to go out in the middle middle of the track and wave my arms. The engineer would slow the train down and the conductor would pull me up on the steps. This was in the middle of the depression years when many hoboes walked the tracks. Sometimes I knew quite well that there were some nearby waiting for the train to slow up. As the train pulled away I could see shadowy figures running to catch on the train. I know the conductor saw them too but he didn't say anything. One Friday's walk at night in late spring stands out in my memory. 1 could see that a severe thunderstorm was about to break. I knew there was an empty house halfway across an empty field. I decided to take shelter there. The windows were gaps in the walls. Thankfully I climbed over one. While I was still hanging to the window window sill I felt the old floor give way under my feet and crash into the cellar. I managed to pull myself out on the ground and thought how fortunate I had been. If I had gone down into the cellar with the floor those at home would have thought I had decided to stay for the weekend and those at the boarding house would have thought I was safe at home. I arrived at the flag station, soaking wet but thankful I was all in one piece! In a time when most people buy things on the installment plan it was refreshing to see this sign in a furniture furniture window: "Try our easy payment payment plan 100% down. No future worries about payments." Orono Skating Club elect new officers by Lynee Lemieux The Orono Figure. Skating Club held it's annual meeting on Tuesday, Tuesday, April 25th at the Orono Arena.
