Forrester, Editor The Loss Would Be A Shame There seems to be the opinion that the VIA train run between Havelock and Toronto could be closed down due to restraints in VIA funding by the federal government. It seem a shame that such a service would be lost but one has to consider consider a reasonable return on the operation. Apparently it is costing the government some fifty percent of the operation costs to provide the service to some two hundred passengers. If more were to use the service there may have been a hope that it would have survived but Canadian do have a love affair with their own automobile and appear to enjoy flooding the highways and parking lots along the lakefront. VIA could provide the parking spaces needed in the north with an abundance of land available. Hopefully the service service will survive and more will make use of this service into the city. It reminds us of a story often told by Harry (Pete) Mercer when he along with others were trying to save the old Grand Trunk line that ran through Orono. It was destined to be closed resulting in a delegation travelling to Toronto to make a bid to keep the service into the Village. On meeting the Minitser of Transport they were asked how did you get to Toronto. The answer of course, by car. The battle was lost right there, ORONO TOWN HALL EUCHRE RESULTS The Orono Town Hall euchre results for Wednesday, Wednesday, May 3, 1989 are as follows: High scores for the evening evening were Hazel Pigott with 91; Aleck Moffat with 89; Ed Couroux with 86; Jean Allen with 84 and Jane Bryant with 81. SAVIOURS Some seventy-two, a sell-out for the John Breen Hall, at St. Saviours, enjoyed a dinner theatre outing on Saturday evening which by all accounts was a fun night for everyone. Beryl Clark, Charles Gray and Dodi Morgan were casted for the rolls in what was called "Esmiradal". The evening also included a fashion show and a home-cooked dinner. The event was such a success for those in attendance that it is now being considered to hold another such event sometime in the future which could be staged for two successive nights.
