< 8-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, May 10, 1989 Intermediate Junior Gardeners Last week it was not hard to planting m- tell spring was on its way with the Orono Junior Gardeners pl an t Si termediate class. Will George "Save the Ganaraska - solve the Gamsby house debate? Over the past few weeks I have read in this newspaper some conflicting conflicting reports concerning a certain house, its present location, and the family that once owned it. But being being a relatively new member of the community, the "pro and con" escapes me entirely, however it all started a train of thought, that until now, has never bothered me. I imagine a number of families can trace their ancestry back quite a number of years, (in fact I know they can) which makes for a stability, stability, and a past on which to build a future, not to mention a knowledge of the area that has been passed down throughout the family, giving them an indisputable authority on all things compatible with the smooth running of life in general (within their own domain!!). I can appreciate this philosophy for it is the one, (and only) thing that has alluded me? I am almost ashamed to say, that I can trace my ancestry back just one •lifetime - my own!!! In my day, little boys were seen, but not heard, and I know nothing of my parents life before I was born. (Perhaps there's a moral hidden somewhere in that remark?) I left home when I was the tender age of seventeen, in fact it was on that very birthday, not I hasten to , add because I had to, I loved "my parents, but somewhere along the line I inherited a wander-lust, I* always wanted to know what was over the horizon, what was the rest of the world like outside my own beloved London? Well I travelled and saw .the world. But while I was away I lost my parents, (and most of London as I knew it too) and with them went the information that only recently, for some reason,' I've realized that I should have found out years ago. But now I suppose I will never know my ancestry, and perhaps that's just as well? I am content with the thought , that I (with Lynne's help?!!!) have started my own lineage, and I'm right proud of it. I think maybe I might be wise to let "sleeping dogs lie" -- with no offense meant to anyone, least of all my ancestors!!! Just George Again" group formed Ministry calls for development hold Last November residents in this neighbourhood began gathering to determine the truth and the threat of land grabs around Kendal and up into the surrounding Ganaraska River headwaters. Now formed into a committee chaired by Kathy Guselle the group has taken the name SAGA, short for their vow to "Save the Ganaraska - AGAIN". The commitment initially is to prevent prevent any change to the Durham Official Official Plan which would permit Estate Residential Housing developments to encroach upon the Ganaraska highlands in the Town of Newcastle, and later Hope Township. Longer range concerns will be to protect these entire fragile lands from mass housing or, dense human use of any kind, and ultimately to seek adequate protection protection for .the magnificent natural features and as yet relatively unharmed uplandS*which deserve to become part of our local and regional heritage. SAGA invites in- Emergency Evacuation (Continued from page 1) Hubbard alsç said the plan must ' be in place and have approval of the Regional government prior to the startup of the Darlington plant expected expected with one unit in September. Brian Nicholson of Oshawa has also been critical of the plan stating that the area for evacuation Should be expanded beyond the 10 kilometre area and that there should be a wider distribution of an information pamphlet by Ontario Hydro. Hydro is to circulate the pamphlet to all "homes within the defined evacuation zone. Mayor Hubbard in speaking to council on Monday said the plans have been tabled by the Task Force. She said they have been waiting on the province for the plan for some time and there is the case of what it is going to cost to train fire and police forces and to implement the plan. "What are the impacts and the impacts of training," she said. She also said the province must look further into the report and come up with operational costs. •" Larry kotsett, chief administrative administrative officer, said that time under the Environmental . hwss- ment Act. The Minister, Jim Bradley, has yet to rule on this request and has asked the Town to ensure that construction construction activities do not proceed until his decision comes forth. The letter to Bradley pointed out that a portion of the Town of Newcastle which contains a large part of the Ganaraska Forest, the headwaters and tributaries of the Ganaraska River, and is known as the south slope of the Oak Ridges Moraine, has recently and suddenly become the target Of a large amount of residential development. The letter did point out that some of the proposals were in the formulating formulating stage but that the Reid/Reynaert parcel was now before council for an Official Plan Amendment and rezoning to allow Estate Residential Development. The letter outlined the demise of the forests resulting in the exposure of eroding tracts of sand and flooding streams. As a result, states the letter, the first conservation authority in Ontario was established established to regenerate the area and.the stabilization of the river through reforesting: "Today the forests proudly proudly cover thousands of acres", states the letter. It was further stated that the torrain is laced with springs and rivulets. The letter of concerned area residents states that no ecological study as to the impact of development development on the lands has been under taken. 'To stem the tide until informed informed planning cun take place we are hereby requesting that this area be designated under the Environmental Environmental Assessment Act," asks the letter. formation and help. Please contact Ann Dilks...983-9727. The Ministry of the Environment has asked the Town of Newcastle to ensure that construction activities do not proceed with the Reid/Raynaert proposed development development in the former Township of Clarke, east of the Oshawa Ski Hill, until further advised by the Minister. ■ The letter to Mayor Hubbard with the Ministry request was the result of a letter earlier this year in which some area citizens had asked the Minister to designate the area seemed to be running out with the first unit to come on stream this fall. He also cautioned that Ontario Ontario Hydro may try to get approval to start-up subject to completion of some works that may not be completed. completed. He also said there were some inadequacies in the emergency response plan. The Ontario Hydro pamphlets are expected to be circulated in Pickering and within the area around the Darlington plant in September. The Oshawa councillor states Hydro is producing the phamphlet in secret but he will review it closely when it comes to the Task Force for approval. The draft emergency plan outlines centres where people would go in the event of a nuclear accident. accident. It includes evacuation routes, and outlines the duties of emergency emergency personnel including police and fire. People would be directed to reception centres where they would report where they would stay during the emergency. This is, however, not a strict requirement. Those with no place to stay outside outside the primary zone would then go , to an evacuation centre where they would be checked for radioactive contamination and treated. They would be found lodging and food. The draft plan outlines reception centre at Durham College, Clarke High School and the Orono Arena. Evacuation Centres include the Port Perry High School and the Lindsay District High School. An exposure control centre for emergency personnel would be established at the Anderson School in Whitby and at Clarke High School.
