The Ministry of Natural Resources is committing $1.85 million to a large-scale rabies project project that will test methods of vaccinating vaccinating the major carriers of rabies in Metropolitan Toronto and rural eastern Ontario. "Rabies is more widespread in Ontario than any other province or state in North.American," Natural Resources Minister Vincent Kerrio said. "This project involves leading-edge research that will help put Ontario in the forefront of finding finding ways to control rabies in wildlife. Rabies incidents in Scarborough Scarborough and Etobicoke this spring bear out the risk that this disease poses to humans, as well as, animals." "My ministry's wide-ranging research projects will examine methods of vaccinating the two major major carriers of rabies, foxes and skunks, ànd will give us new information information in the fight to bring this disease under control." 1 In the Metropolitan Toronto < rabies project, baits containing vaccine vaccine will be placed in areas where foxes have been seen and puprearing puprearing dens subsequently located. The vaccine-baits will be distributed from June 19 to 23 in areas of Scarborough, Scarborough, the City of Toronto, York, North York, East York and Etobicoke. During May and June, people who see foxes -- which are found mostly in ravine areas, and are most active at dawn and dusk - are asked, to telephone the Rabies Research Unit during business hours at 832-7154. Also in Metro Toronto, MNR biologists will again immunize skunks in the Scarborough area. From July into the fall skunks will be trapped, vaccinated by injection and released. Skunks are injected because the oral vaccine for foxes does not work with skunks. The already successful program in Scarborough will continue in a 60 square kilometre area, from Highway 401 to Lake Ontario, bounded by Mârkham Road on the east and Victoria Park Avenue on the west. In another project, in eastern Ontario Ontario this October, MNR biologists will undertake a large-scale experiment experiment aimed at immunizing foxes. In this program, vaccine-bait will be dropped from aircraft over rural land. The baiting method was tested in Huron county on a smaller scale in 1986 and 1987. The 1989 program in eastern Ontario Ontario will be the first large-scale wildlife rabies control experiment in Canada. It will cover the triangular area from Napanee north to Pembroke Pembroke and east to Cornwall. If successful, the project will create a rabies-free zone in this area 1 which can be expanded westward in future programs. "MNR's rabies research efforts have already resulted in a number of firsts," said Mr. Kerrio. "Officials from my ministry, working with a commercial laboratory, developed the first oral A province wide screenin 8 Program Program for brep-4 cancer is the first step in an action plan for speciality care launched today by Health Minister Elinor Caplan. The specialty care plan, announced announced in the recent Throne Speech, will stress cancer prevention and treatment, treatment, cardiovascular care, dialysis, emergency and trauma services, AIDS, and care for mothers and the newborn. The breast screening program for women between the ages of 50 and 64 is expected to save up to 300 lives per year. When fully operational, it is expected expected that the program will screen more than 300,000 women annually and that breast cancer deaths will be reduced by up to 40 per cent in the 50 to 64 age group. The ministry will provide $5 million in start-up and operating funds this year to establish the first eight centres. "Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths of women in the 50-64 age group in Ontario," the minister said. "The program will encourage women to attend screening clinics every two years for a physical examination and mammogram." Mrs. Caplan said Dr. Aileen Clarke, a chief of epidemiology and statistics at the Ontario Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation, Foundation, has been appointed as the ministry's cancer co-ordinator for Ontario. The minister said that the breast screening program stresses early detection and encourages community-based care. "It is in keeping with directions set out by the Premier's Council on Health Strategy. By 1995, we expect to have 36 centres established across the province," she said. The Ontario Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation will administer administer the program. Representatives Representatives from its eight regional treatment centres, will work with district health councils, health care professionals and consumers to determine the location of the centres centres and assist with the implementation implementation of the program. The ministry will develop an educational campaign emphasizing cancer prevention and detection. Mrs. Caplan also announced an additional $1.2 million in operating costs to the Bayview Regional Cancer Centre during a visit to the centre today. The centre is being expanded expanded to provide increased radiation radiation therapy services. Dr. Clarke brings a wealth of bait that is highly successful in attracting attracting foxes to the vaccine." "With this program, Ontario is on the leading edge of research and development to combat rabies. This technology is already being looked at by other jurisdictions in Canada, the U.S.A., the Caribbean and by the United Nations' World Health Organization," Mr. Kerrio said. The fox-baiting projects in Metro Toronto and eastern Ontario are still experimental in nature, therefore, the ministry advises pet owners to ensure their pets are properly properly vaccinated against rabies. Pets who might take the baits will not be harmed, but likely won't be immunized immunized either. A number of agencies have been involved in the provincial rabies vaccination program, as members of the Rabies Advisory Committee. They include the , Ontario Veterinary College, the Ministry of Health, Connaught Laboratories, the Ministry of Agriculture anti Food, Agriculture Canada, the University of Waterloo Department of Biology and the Ministry of Natural Resources. knowledge and experience Ur her position as cancer co-ordinator.
