The fifteenth anniversay of the Kinettes Orono gearing up for Heritage '89 event Orono is gearing up for the Heritage '89 event which gets underway on Saturday, May 27th in the Village. Various communities in the Town are participating in this outing which is sponsored by the Town of Newcastle through the Heritage '89 volunteer committee. It is time now to mark your calendar calendar as to the events in Orono which will include an early morning pancake pancake breakfast under the ladle of the Orono Oddfellows. To follow a Sidewalk art show and sale as well as a Heritage collection collection show and sale in the Orono Town Hall. Many of the artists from last years art show will be in On Saturday evening in Newcastle the Great Pine Ridge Kinettes celebrated their fifteeth anniversay of service to the community at a dance and social evening. Town sees 10 acre lot severance as a precedent they do not wish The General Purpose committee of the Town of Newcastle on Monday Monday termed a severance from a 10 acre lot in the former Clarke Township would be precedent setting setting and could lead to a flood of such requests. Council members, in a majority, did support the recommendation of the planning department that the rezoning application be denied. The application is one of the first splitting of 10 acres lots to come before them. The planning department noted that the application of L and L. Falconeri, east side of Squair Road just north of the Third Concession, did not conform to the official plan to allow a rural-residential lot. The planning report stated that to allow Newcastle giving no concessions to Laidlaw The Town of Newcastle gives no quarters to the Laidlaw Waste Management proposal for either an infilling plan or expansion of their landfill site north-west of Newton- ville. Aleck Moffat with 87; Madeline Buckley and Bessie Stephenson each with 81; Charlie Finney with 79 and Edith Gordon with 76. Low score for the evening was Morley McAllister. Winners of the draws were: Joyce Cowan, Marg Linton, Bob Simpson, Reg Eliiott and Bernice srtner. Euchre is held every Wednesday evening at 8:00 p.m., however euchre will end for the summer. Last euchre night wili be held May 31st and will commence again in October. Ladies please bring small iunch. ORONO SENIOR CEES HOLD CARD PARTY The May 11 Orono Senior Cees Euchre winners were Thelma Gilbank and Inez Harris tied with 63, Gladys Greenwood had 60. Low Jean Allen. "Bingo" prize Thelma Gilbank. Of interest at 2:00 p.m. is a (Continued page 3) let contract for Orono storm sewer project The Orono Village storm sewer project on Somerville Drive, Main Street, Church Street and Victoria Street has come in under the engineers estimate. The contract was approved on Monday to be now approved by council this corning week. The contract has been awarded to Quadson Construction Ltd. of Concord, Ontario for an amount, of $320,865.00. The engineers had estimated the cost at $388,336',000. This is the first stage of the work to be undertaken in Orono south this year. Other associated works and costs are estimated at $109,000 for engineering services, $20,000 for contingencies, $220,350.00 for hot mix paving, sidewalks, curb and gutters and $153,785.00 for road reconstruction. The total cost of the project is now estimated at $824,000.00. According to the engineer's letter the contractor is prepared to start the storm sewers the week of May 29th. School, in attending the recent Newcastle Port Granby/Environment Granby/Environment committee outlined. outlined. interesting i points of a recent United Nation Association seminar held in London, Ontario entitled "Peace and Ecology-Making the Links", Climenhage attended the four- day session after having submitted an essay and application. She was sponsored locally by the Newcastle Port Granby group. She outlined a portion of the program program which featured three keynote speakers after which the 132 students broke, up into groups of ten for discussion of the various topics relating to Peace and Ecology.
