Anyway the Tri-County Novice hockey team won the B Championship. Championship. They beat a strong team from Manvers in a best of five series. Orono had come from behind to do so after tying the first two games with identical scores of 2-2 and suffering suffering a loss in the third game by a score of 4-2, Orono was behind the eight ball going into the final weekend of the season, one more loss and they were finished. In game 4, Orono got supreme goaltending, strong defense and just the right amount offense to master a 2-1 win. Well that tied things and made for an exciting game 5 to be played in Manvers. Orono came into the final game very loose with lots of chatter and smiling faces in the dressing room before the game. They took this good feeling into the game, a game that can only be described as Orono's finest of the season. Orono completely dominated every aspect of the game from the shutout goaltendmg, to the blanket defense that was played by all five skaters that were on the ice at any one time and of course the offense who provided provided the 3 goals. If the kids on this team learned only one thing this year I hope it's that hard and persistent team work over a long period of time will usually bring the rewards and benefits one deserves. I deliberately didn't mention any names for goals or other deeds because of the belief that although there's individual accomplishments accomplishments the game of hockey is a team sport and the individual can't be successful without a supporting supporting team. Congratulations! Warns campers of dangers in tents Federal Consumer and Corporate Affairs Minister Bernard Valcourt today reminded campers that tents not made with flame-retardant fabric are easily ignited and warned owners of such tents to exercise extreme extreme caution. "Every year, many Canadians, die or are injured when their tents catch fire," Mr. Valcourt said, "and most of the victims are children. "Sparks and ashes from a fire, a campstove or any naked flame touching the canvas can ignite the tent and burn it to the ground in less than a minute, Unbelievable as it* may seem." In 1988, the Canadian tent industry industry switched to flame-retardant canvas and nylon fabrics in response to stringent flammability limits proposed under the Hazardous Hazardous Products Act. Flame- retardant fabric does not catch fire easily and tends to self-extinguish when the ignition source is removed. removed. This change in fabric is expected to significantly reduce the number of accidental tent fires. To reduce the risk of fire and for a safe camping season, the Minister recommended the following guidelines: lj Never use candles. matches or lighters in or near a tent; 2) Do not cook or smoké inside a tent; 3) Don't store fuel inside a tent. Refuel lamps, heaters or stoves outside and well away from ..open flames; 4) Build campfires downwind and well away from the tent. Never leave a fire unattended; 5) Practice extreme caution when using fuel-powered lanterns and heaters inside a tent. Extinguish lanterns before going to sleep. He also recommended that consumers consumers check the label when buying a tent to ensure that it is made from flame-retardant fabric. Ontario Hydro in strong position for the 1990s Ontario Hydro is in a strong position position to weather the cost pressures expected over the next four years, said Chairman and President Robert Franklin in releasing the corporation's 1988 annual report. "I'm confident we'll be able to hold rate increases at or near the rate of inflation while bringing into service new equipment for generating and transmitting electricity electricity and for protecting the environment," environment," Franklin said. Hydro finished fiscal 1988 with net income of $626 million. That lowered its debt to equity ratio to .829, the lowest level in a dozen years. Franklin said net income was boosted by the upward trend of the Canadian dollar and stronger than forecast growth in the demand for electricity-almost five per cent a year for the fifth year in a row. He acknowledged that such strong growth is bad news as well as good for the utility. "Given this high growth, it's essential that Hydro's energy efficiency efficiency programs succeed. Our target is to reduce growth in electricity electricity demand by 4500 megawatts by the turn of the century-roughly equal to the peak electricity use of Metro Toronto. "We will also be making more efficient efficient use of existing generating equipment and developing remaining remaining hydro-electric sites, such as the new plant being studied for the Niagara Falls area. And we will ■ continue to encourage independent power developers. By the year 2000, we'll need them to provide at least 1000 megawatts more than they do now," Franklin said. "We are conscious that Ontario Hydro must make the most efficient use of the generation equipment and natural resources available. All forms of electricity generation have an impact on the environment. So using resources well and withoût waste is the prime meastire of our committment to the environment," Franklin said.
