Hopeful solution for diamond scheduling Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, May 24, 1989 " Laidlaw Waste Systems Lid. hold second open house re expansion Laidlaw Waste Systems Ltd. held their second open house concerning an expansion bid to develop a further further 119 acre landfill site north-east of Newtonville on Tuesday evening of last week. Protesters were again present mainly from the Committee of Clarke Constituents opposing the proposal. Laidlaw expects to submit their application in ' the - fall, -possibly September, for an official plan amendment from the Region of Durham and at which time a submission submission will be made to the Ministry of the fenvironment as well as a request request for a Rezoning and Official Plan amendment to the 'Town of Newcastle. Although the Open House did not involve the Infilling proposal which Laidlaw is also seeking the firm expects to have all documentation documentation of the infilling proposal in within the next two months. An application application for rezoning is on file with the Town of Newcastlerand according according to the Town's planning department department is awaiting further documentation before proceeding with processing of the application. The Infilling proposal affects some twenty acres between two mounds of garbage that now exist on the property which has not been used due to the fact that the Trans Canada Pipe Line is buried in that particular area. Laidlaw plan that the pipe line would be moved to circumvent circumvent the infilling site. (Continued page 3) The scheduling of ball diamond times in Orono through the Community Community Services department of the Town of Newcastle has created somewhat' of storm in the Village for local users. ■ The scheduling foul-up h'as affected affected the girls' softball team the most in which they have to scurry around the Village looking for a bit of green to practice on. The regular schedule opens this coming week for most of the teams. The Orono Amateur Athletic Association had been gi'ven the fairground diamond on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday Thursday for practices and games. Farther Farther the two diamonds at the park, . the early hours, were also available . to Orono teams sponsored by the Athletic on Mondays through to Thursday. ' . It seems that Thursday evening had been taken away from the Athletic and latter for the Tuesday evening without any word reaching the coaches and managers of the girls teams. When the local teams arrived they found that a Bowmanville Men's LOBB team also had a permit permit for the diamond for the same evenings, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Chris Faulkner, one of the coaches, states it does make it difficult difficult when you arrange for a practice practice only to find the diamond has been taken. The girls' team make use of the fairground diamond while the boys teams make use of the park diamonds and the school soccer pitches are always busy with another bumper year in Orono for soccer. Faulkner states that the Community Community Services department has promised to have the issue of double double permits straightened out the first of this week. The issue has had parents and managers somewhat upset when teams outside of Orono are using .the local diamonds, and adults, when the local kids have no facilities in which to play.
