4-Orono Weekly l imes, Wednesday, May 31, 1989 SPORTS Armstrong's Soccer club starts season with win Orono Jr. Gardners held spring show Armstrong's IGA Soccer Team started their season with a win Monday, May 15th edging Salem with a final score of 2-1. It was an action packed game with no scoring in the 1st half. Early in the 2nd half Jeff Vanhaverbeke scored the 1st goal of the game, assisted by Rob French. Soon after, Terry Beavais scored, assisted by Jeff Vanhaverbeke to give Orono IGA a 2-0 lead. The team held on to win the game allowing only one goal for the opposing team. The team is lacking one very essential ingredient for a winning team, the fans, so let's all conte out to their next game and cheer them on to victory. Last Saturday night, the Orono men's team (Armstrong's IGA) dominated the game against Zion. Chris Vanhaverbeke got the ball rolling scoring the 1st goal on a penalty shot. The next 2 goals were scored by brother, Jeff Vanhaverbeke assisted by Ted Gaudet and Steve Graham respectively. respectively. Terry Beauvais scored the next goal, assisted by Mike Ruthard giving Orono a 4-0 lead. The 5th goal, scored by a penalty shot by Darren Lewis and the 6th goal by Chris Vanhaverbeke assisted by Terry Beauvais clinched the win with a final score of 6-0. Mark Sargent gets the shut-out. Then again on Monday, Armstrong's Armstrong's IGA continued their winning winning streak squeaking by Solina to win the game 2-1. Solina took the lead early in the 1st half, with Orono tying it up shortly after with a goal by Chris Vanhaverbeke assisted by newcomer, Andrew Yates. Andrew also assisted on the next goal by Jeff Vanhaverbeke. Orono held on to wjin a fast paced gante allowing no scoring in the 2nd half. Orono Pee Wees lose out to Oshawa club The Orono Pee Wee Baseball team lost it's first game of the young season on Sunday, May 28th. The team faced a hard hitting and solid defensive Oshawa squad and were defeated by the score of 14 to five, evening Orono's season record at one win and a loss. The big right hander Mike Landers was on the mound for Orono trying for his second win of the season. Mike's previous outing was a classic as he shut out Pickering Pickering on a complete game one hitter. ; Orono scored 2 runs in the first inning inning when Larry Houston led off with a walk and Scott Bordun followed with a single. Daryl Reid grounded out to second advancing both runners into scoring position. Darryll Houston, hit a sharp grounder to third and both runs scored when the • Oshawa third baseman failed to come up with the ball. Orono's lead was short lived as Oshawa got to Mike in their first at bat and touched him for a total of 5 runs in the frame. Oshawa scored two more runs in the second inning to take a 7 to 2 lead. Orono came right back in the third inning when Mike hit the first of his two doubles in the game and Chris Cholette drove in Mike and , Darryll Houston who was on base courtesy of a free pass. Oshawa continued to pound the ball and aided by some sloppy Orono defense, coasted to a well deserved victory. Mike pitched four innings giving up 7 hits walking 3 and striking striking out 2 Oshawa batters. Daryl Reid saw his first mound duty as he pitched a respectable two innings . giving up 3 hits walking three and fanning three. The big hitter for Orono was Chris Cholette who stroked three singles. Other Orono hits went to Mike Landers with 2 doubles. Scott Bordun, Paul Woods and Jason Taylor chipped in with the other Orono hits. ^ Line score Orono 5 runs, 8 hits, 4 errors; Oshawa 14 runs, 10 hits, 0 errors. Orono has two home games this week as they face Peterboro on Tuesday, May 30th and Port Hope on Thursday, June 1st. Game time for both games is 6:30. The team is selling tickets to raise funds to help cover expenses. First prize is four Blue Jafy tickets in the Skydome plus door to door Limousine service to thé game. Tickets may be purchased from any member of the Orono Pee Wees. On May 23 we held our Spring Flower Show. Each of our 22 members entered in many of the 6 classes, in all there were 85 entries. Area students among the best at science fair Three students from The Northumberland Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education captured top medals at the recent Canada-wide Science Fair held in St. John's, Newfoundland. Dana Moffit, a Grade 8 student at Brighton Public School, won a bronze medal in the computer sciences division (Grades 7-8) for his project, a graphics package for IBM called "Pixel Pan 11", as well as a cash prize from IBM Canada. A good time was had by all. The students were competing with about 380 students from across the country and with students from West Germany and Australia who had been invited to the National Fair.
