Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, May 31, 1989-7 An early morning breakfast in Orono Participants in opening ceremonies at Skydome The Ontario Provincial Police Golden Helmets Motorcycle Motorcycle Precision team has been honoured with a prominent role in the official opening ceremony of Toronto's Skydome, June 3, 1989. Eighteen riders' and two members in a cruiser will be among the approximately 4,500 volunteer performers in the 90 minute show, which begins at • 8:00 p.m. Following an opening musical tribute to the' many activities Skydome can host, the Golden Helmets will take to the field to perform a routine designed for the occasion. It will showcase their trademark riding skills, precision manoeuvres, and complex patterns - and end with all the motorcycles on an elevated stage. The team has put in a number of hours rehearsing the new routine, including some trial runs in the dome. Following the performance, they'll escort the limousine of various dignitaries into the stadium, before returning to the field for the finale, which will include the opening of Skydome's retractable roof. Formed in 1963, the Golden Helmets tour the province each year, performing in fairs, festivals and parades. Its members are officers on regular traffic patrol duties at Southern Ontario detachments. Saturday with their annual Board of Education meeting highlights Western Area Schools At a Regular Board Meeting last night, trustees approved bridge financing for the addition to Vincent Vincent Massey Public School and for the new school to be located on the Courtice Heights property with carrying carrying costs to be included in the final debenture value. Day Care Facilities in New Schools The Province now requires that new schools house day care facilities. But, as trustees examined the proposed plans for the new Courtice area school, there was •some confusion about whether the day care centre should be completely completely self-contained or. whether there should be sharing ot some facilities such as kitchens and staff rooms. Trustees last night approved q resolution to invite a representative of the Ministry of Education and of the Ministry of Community and Social Services to discuss the issue at the next Board Meeting. Port hope School When the Ministry recently announced announced its capital grant allocations, allocations, they ignored 1 ' the Board's third priority on its list -of school projects--a new school for the Port Hope area. While the Board is waiting for an official explanation from the Ministry, the Town of Port Hope recenlty decided to ask the Minister of Education to reverse the decision on not granting funds * for the proposed Port Hope School.
