But all I ever have to do to realize that it ain't true is read about the daily news, and then I quickly change tny views. In a land not so far away a new revolt began today; today; a hurricane destroys a town, an earthquake knocks another down. A bunch of desperate men are slain for challenging some strong man's reign; a million folks or more today are hungry and will stay that way. So though my pile of woes seem tall, my problem all are pretty small, and prob'ly nothing else would be as good as farming is, by gee. Those of you that remember my account of attempting to get some friends of mine into Canada as immigrants immigrants from New Zealand, should have told me.that I was wasting my time. All my efforts failed and "They" have returned to On Saturday, June 3rd at Orono Park at approximately 3:00 p.m. an official presentation was made but without an official! The Champion Pee Wee Tri County Hockey team had assembled to receive pot only their individual trophies and medals, but more importantly, present present 'the spoils Of their victory' - a Chaihpionship Banner to be hung alongside past conquering teams, on Orono Arena's west wall. Thanks to Bill Tomlinson's dedicated commitment to completing completing the banner on time, the stage was set for the momentous occasion. occasion. Roy Forrester was there armed with his Pentax, the Orono Kinsmen were well represented for their sponsorship, Esso Canada as well ('The Achievement Medal People') People') were there, but to no one's surprise the representative for the The first of Darlington's nuclear reactors will soon be fired up. From that point on it will routinely release radiation into our environment. The Darlington Tritium Facility (TRF) has already done this. In October 1988 after running just three days the TRF suffered an accident which effectively closed the facility. At the time, Ontario Hydro emphasized that thanks to the containment system, no radiation radiation had escaped. But on January 19, 1989, after much prodding, Hydro admitted that in fact a "trace" of tritium (approx. 8 curies) had escaped to the environment. environment. Containment systems like those at the TRF are used to block the uncontrolled uncontrolled release of radiation. Unfortunately Unfortunately this is often only a tem- ■porary solution which allows the nuclear industry some breathing space. Later on, as the emergency subsides, this trapped radiation is diluted into the environment in what is referred to as a "controlled release" or "venting". In March '89, Hydro finally admitted admitted that rather than "no radiation" radiation" or "traces of radiation", in the last three months of 1988, the TRF deliberately vented 65,146 curies of tritium oxide and 2,662 curies of tritium gas into our environment. environment. No data was volunteered for releases in 1989. As Hydro dilutes tritium into the air we breath and the water. we drink they are also diluting the health of this community. Certainly by venting tritium, Ontario Hydro is throwing more than caution to' the wind. Hydro claims that tritium exposures to their workers and the public are within "permissable levels" but we know that every exposure exposure to tritium' increases the chance of developing cancer and genetic defects. Since there is no such thing as a safe exposure, and since the cost of totally, eliminating tritium emissions', would price nuclear power out of existence, we can of course expect the Nuclear industry industry to continue to claim that tritium venting is "acceptable". their native Bavaria. (So endeth the lesson!!) But at least I tried, who was it that said, "You can^beat City City Hall" -- he was one smart cookie. I notice the village is once again putting on its summer face, the two "Bills" were in action recently pruning the trees along Main Street, (Well done guys). This was exemplified exemplified by the new frontage on some of the stores, and this all looks pretty good and will probably look even better during "Heritage snow!!!) I would like to state (with Roy's approval) that in my last story, I had no intention of "solving the Gamsby house debate", quite the opposite I was trying to present the fact that I don't even know my own background, much less anyone elses. For the past several years, (Lynne and I have been here fifteen years now) so we don't really consider ourselves "Newcomers" but during that time we've had a sizeable vegetable garden -- this is sizeable by my standards, not Orono standards. standards. But it became too difficult for 'Lynne' to manage, you will note that I am honest, if not useful. However this year we decided to grass it over, and make the whole back into a lawn. This was a good theory, but it now takes twice as long to mow the darn thing, and with the price of gas going up - ah well, you can't win 'em all. And now to revert to an old gripe of mine, I would like to comment briefly on our postal service. I have often wondered why it takes (now) a small parcel (i.e. a message tape) over two weeks from overseas, when it used to take six days? This probably is termed "progress" "progress" (this should possibly read "regress"). Some of you may remember my stories of our new pup (Princess) about a year ago. Well she's still relatively small, but is a going concern, concern, and she still confounds me as to how she manages to get through holes in the hedges, smaller than herself! HowitWr, I've finally managed to restrict her wandering (I hope) by totally enclosing the property with chicken wire (including both gates - one of her favourite exits). Unfortunately Unfortunately the property now resembles a concentration camp, but even they weren't totally successful successful if I remember correctly. And so for now to one and all, I say happy springtime, (or what's left of it) and have a good summer. 1 As usual Just George Letter to the Editor Letter to the Editor Removal . health normal. The coaching staff experienced experienced this complacent attitude earlier at the 'Coaches Dinner' hosted by this same O.A.A. when no mention was made of their team's major success. To my knowledge, this was the only Orono hockey team to win a Championship Championship this year.
