Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, June 14, 1989-3 If you see Glory on Thursday wish her a nifty birthday Six days at Opinicon Lake A couple of weeks ago Bill Bunting Bunting and I spent six days at Queen's University Biological Station north of Kingston on Opinicon Lake. It was six days of constant field trips and lectures on many aspects of the world of nature about us. Bill and I were two of eighteen in attendance at this annual event that is organized through the Biological Station in an effort to further enhance a general knowledge of nature. Those in attendance ranged in age from the mid twenties all the way to a scattering of seniors and' from all walks of life. One of our rooms mates was from New York, State, others from various points in Ontario . , Chapleau included . . and one from Chesterfied Bay in the North West Territories. To say the least it was a mixed bag but an interesting bag. Of further interest was the fact that all lectures and field trips were presented or accorhpanied by professors, professors, mainly from the University or connected to the University or such as the Royal Botanical Gardens. There was a lot of knowledge and expertise available just for the asking. V/' The Station, as we understand, undertakes considerable research in a wide variety of elements of [ nature. Research on wildlife, fish, plant life and the list goes on even to birds. There was small fields of bird houses to attract the tree swallows and blue birds. In speakiing of birds there were a number of field trips for identification, identification, one starting gt 4 a.m. when we travelled to Prince Edward County for what was an outstanding day in the number of birds tabulated as they proceeded in their migratipn north. The day ended at nine with the evening session being a session on sonograms ( a means of identifying identifying bird songs). The sessions touchedt on geology, flora and fauna, aquatic biology, limnology, keys to insect order, mammals, reptiles and no doubt others. The first field session was that of tree identification and this will be one outing I will not forget about and the lesson 1 learned on how to identify Choke Cherry, beyond any doubt. » Bill had put his stamp of Choke Cherry on one small tree but a professor professor had suggested that it was more than likely black cherry due to the fact that the small nodes were not on the under side of the stem at the base of the leaf. Now Bill doesn't give up easily, so I have found out over the years, and he wasn't about to on the Choke Cherry bit. Of course he has a" lot of knowledge and expertise to back him up in the field of trees. Snipping off a small twig he asked asked the professor to chew on the end and if it had-a skunky taste it was Choke Cherry. Now whether thé professor had poor taste buds I'm not sure but by this time all eighteen and the four to five leaders were in the act snipping off a twig to chew on. I was begining to feel sorry for the poor treè being pruned so early in the year and hoping that it survived. survived. , I think in the end Bill won out and he did confide in me later that anyqne should have known that a Blqc'k Cherry would not have sur- Lettei* to the Editor Letter to We would like t0 mfe a Tew comments regard^ the . chea P shots taken at the ^ rono Amateur Athletic Associât* 011 (O.A.A.A.) and it's President Gord Lowery by the coaching staff of the Tri- County Peewee hockey team. Gord has been a member of the O.A.A.A, for a great number of years. He has also been the President President for many years and the only reason he has continued in that capacity is because no one else would take the position and rather than see the Association disappear, Gord reluctantly volunteered to serve for another two year term. There is no one in Orono who works harder and does more volunteer work with the O.A.A.A. than Gord and it certainly takes no class to take shots at him through the newspaper. It would be much more constructive to come to an Athletic meeting and air your complaints complaints so that the person in question question could respond in person. We don't know where Gord was on the Saturday in question. Perhaps he was at the same place as the previous Saturday when he spent between 4 and 5 hours with a lawnmower cutting the grass at the soccer field to make it playable. We I vived in the environment in which the tree was growing. He also said that the nodes had not developed at this stage, it being early growth of the leaves. The only thing I could say, "You can chalk that one up in your favour." There are other aspects of the six days at Lake Opinicon I would like to share but possibly this issue of From Around Home is long enough. Possibly more for next week especially the interest I found in the geology session. don't suppose that these coaches, ■ who have kids playing soccer, bothered.to thank him. We do happen to know where Gord was at 2:00 o'clock on the Sunday morning following the Saturday in question. He was at the Arena wiping tables, stacking chairs and taking out garbage prior to closing the Arenà^ for the evening following a wedding anniversary at which he was a guest; For the past two summers, members of the OiA.A.A, have taken turns looking after the Orono Arena on weekends to give the Arena Manager a break. We all have things we'd rather be doing, but the alternative is to hire more help. This in turn would mean higher hockey fees and we all know who would be the first to complain. All our coaches and volunteers are equally important to the organization and we don't think any of them should request special recognition for team ac-, complishments at the Appreciation Banquet. It should also be noted that the O.A.A.A. donated 10 dollars for each player and coach of the team to help buy their trophies. Also, the banner that they are going to donate to the Association was ordered and paid for by the Association. It is very eàsy to be critical, but if you want to do something constructive, constructive, -why don't you come and attend attend our meetings and become a member. Perhaps you could help right some of the thihgs you feel are wrong with the organization. The O. A.A.A. méets at the Arena every second Sunday of the month. We're sure that when 7 o'clock rolls around we'll be able to say, "Where are you Dave Shetler, Bob Tompkins, Tompkins, and Dean Cox?". P. S. the Editor: Taxes - We have no choice we must pay them but 1 feel the time has come to question the large yearly yearly increases. Federal, Provincial and Municipal Taxes are up again, well over the inflation rate. What ever happened to that little word "NO"? When is the greed in this country going to end? Have our politicians gone mad? I received my Municipal Tax Bill this week -- The Town of Newcastle portion if NOT 9.7 Vo increase it is a 35 Vo increase. The Regional portion is discriminatory and against the Canadian Charter of Rights as long as Whitby and Oshawa refuse to go to Market Value Assessment. The School portion - What can I say the "God Like Creatures" on our School Board just continue to push for more with no regard for the taxpayer. taxpayer. Our local politicians could start a trend by honestly trying cut backs, restraint and responsibility. They might like it and possibly could look forward to another term in office. office. Sincerely, Lorraine Lover To say Gord isn't interested in the Tri-County is ludicrous. He just happened to be the Association's Tri-County contact person last season and as such spent many hours in the middle of winter driving driving back and forth to Beaverton to , attend meetings on their behalf.
