Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, June 14, 1989-7 Just George As I sit at home writing this, the TV has just finished reminding me that today is the anniversary of "D" Day. (How soon we forget!) And no I didn't cross the channel that day, nor did I take any part in the invasion, I was on a warship in the north of England, little knowing that in a few short weeks I would be in the South Pacific fighting the Japanese. (Perhaps the "D" Day landings "May" have been more comfortable, to what we experienced!! experienced!! -- But that's another story) I suppose in a way, I was lucky! And come to think of it, I've always (so far) been "lucky". And on that theme, 1 was also recently referred to as "Happy George", by a very good friend. These remarks tend to become embarrassing, embarrassing, but I must admit that I am not only "lucky", but also "happy" and why not? In this village I'm surrounded by good friends and neighbours who make my life very happy and therefore I "am" lucky, and so, if you pass me in the village and I say 'G' Day, I really mean it. (And yes, I have been to Australia!!!) To quote an old, yet very true expression, expression, "Cry and you cry alone, -- Smile and the whole world smiles with you." And talking of crying, Lynne recently talked me into visiting a car dealer (name withheld to protect the innocent) -- that's the joke of the day!!! This visit entailed the possibility of buying a new car. Everything was going smoothly until until we found out that our 'three' year old car (in perfect condition) was now worth exactly 'half' of the original price. So endeth the lesson!!! I think our Buick will be adorning my driveway for many months to come. (I thought we had to keep up with the Jones, but come to think of it, I don't think I know any Jones!!!) If any of you read my story last week, you may recall my habitual complaint regarding our postal service service (well founded, I might add) -- but not directed at Carol or Blain naturally. However, to add insult to injury, a couple of days later, I received a 'flyer' in the mail entitled 'Better Mail. Service'. (I imagine you all got one, you lucky people) wherein they state and I quote "Delivery, in the same Province -- 3 business days. This statement would be funny if it wasn't so ridiculous! Oh well, I suppose we can't expect miracles - even if we have to pay top price for them. And on that cheerful note I must bid you farewell'for at least another week. It's being so miserable, that keeps me 'happy'.
