Although earwigs can damage flowers and vegetables, they are beneficial in that they feed on other insects as well as on slugs. By using a combination of chemical and cultural methods, homeowners should be able to keep the earwig population at a tolerable level. Pasture Tips - With all the rain we have had pastures, have been wonderful. In fact, growth has been good enough that in many cases, it has got ahead of the cattle and the grasses are heading out. The problem problem with this is that as soon as the grass heads out, it stops growing and producing new shoots for the cattle to. eat. Unless you can train your cows to eat the dry seeds, it would be a good idea to get the mower out and clip everything off about 6 inches high to get new growth started and to stop the weeds from seeding down. If you didn't fertilize last spring it could be à good idea to put on some nitrogen to give the new growth a boost. Approximately Approximately 50 lbs. of actual nitrogen per acre will make a real difference - if you are flush with money and want a bigger response, anything up to 100 lbs. actual N usually gives good value. Should you use urea or ammonium nitrate? If you are sure of getting rain right away, urea is probably your best value, but if it's going to be a while before you get rain, amrnonium nitrate is probably your best bet at the nitrogen loss to the air is slower than it is with urea.
