He's very popular, and has become quite a celebrity. For good reason. He's a peg-legged gull! Clifford no longer flies through the air with the greatest of ease. He just clip-clops around the repair shop at Butler Marine in Penetanguishene, oblivious to smiling smiling spectators. While other seagulls are looked upon with mixed emotions by most people, Clifford inspires interest and admiration in all. When he feels like taking a rest, he has a cardboard box with his name on it where he can hold up for awhile. He doesn't have to scrounge around for food like others of his kind. People are always giving him tidbits. He appears to be quite satisfied with his lifestyle, which strangely enough, started with a run of bad luck., It all began about a year ago when Clifford was hit by a car and one of his wings was broken. He was found by Dan Fraser, manager of the wood and fibreglass at the marina, who gave the young gull a warm and safe home for the winter. "He could never fly again", says Fraser. "He'd walk around the shop waiting for the coffee truck to come along, and people gave him scraps from their lunches. Under the circumstances, he led a good life." But Clifford was one of the roving roving kind. One day he wandered out of the workshop and on to a busy street. He was hit by a car again. When Fraser located him, his other wing was broken and his leg mangled. mangled. "I took him to a vet, but- they couldn't do much for him," said Dan. "It was hard for him to hop, so I made him a wooden leg. He caught on to it pretty fast and started to clip-clop along." Clifford did so well with his new leg that he went to another journey. He roamed about two miles to the downtown area to visit the Dock Lunch, one of his old haunts. It's amazing that he didn't get clobbered again, but when Fraser went down to get him, he seemed to be all right. He brought him back to the shop, and Clifford slept in his box for the rest of the day. "He just seems to have bad luck," Dan mused as he held Clifford Clifford in his arms. "One time he swallowed a spgrerib bone that got stuck in his throat. 1 had to take him to the vet again." Although he can no longer swoop and soar like his buddies, Clifford's new life has its compensations. He has a comfortable year round home, lots of friends and plenty of food. Paradoxically, his bad luck has brought him good fortune. For all we know, he may be thinking, "By Gully, 1 never had it better!"
