History of Kendal Church Kendal United Church, In the 1850's, the people of Kendal Kendal and outlying areas gathered for worship in the home of Mrs. W. Payne and later at the home of Mr. Francis Armstrong. Out of their meetings was bom a Union Sunday School which met for several years in the Temperance Hall, which was destroyed by fire. The minister resided in the Parsonage at Newtonville. In 1917 the Presbyterian Church, which was also located in Kendal, , had to close and united with the lylethodist Church. These churches were the first to unite in Ontario under the arrangement of the two congregations. In 1925 the United Church of Canada came into being and Kendal Church became one of the many churches comprising this Church. The Methodist Church had been renovated and redecorated and reopening services were held to commemorate commemorate this event on December 10th, 1890 when the pulpit was occupied occupied by Rev. George Leach of Brooklin and Rev. Jesse Whitlock of Columbus. 4 In September 1930, under the capable leadership of pastor Rev. Thomas Wallace, Kendal United Church celebrated its Diamond Jubilee with special services conducted conducted by former ministers. Many social events were held in connection with the Jubilee. The present Sunday School room, which was originally the New Connexion Church, located on the Elliott's farm, was attached to the church and eventually raised to the same floor level. Electricity was installed in 1939. Extensive renovations were carried out in the 1960's with the church being entirely redecorated, broadloom put on the floor, new pews were put in the church. The centre aisle was widened which added added much to the appearance of the building. The old kitchen was torn down and a modern kitchen was built with running water and modern conveniences. In 1970 the Centennial Year project was .to install electric heating and discarding the old wood burning stoves along with their pipes. In the 1980's the Sunday ' School Room had A facelift, with wall to wall carpeting being installed and the whole room being painted by church members. The exterior of the church has also been repainted to Council Briefs Planting 300 trees in Town of Newcastle In speaking with Walter Evans, Director of Public Works for the Town of Newcastle, 300 trees will be planted along roadways in the municipality this year. Two hundred trees are being supplied supplied by Ontario Hydro with a further further 100 by the Town of Newcastle. The Town has also accepted a tender in the amount of $9,778.00 submitted by Ontario Line Clearing Services Ltd. of Cobourg for tree maintenance within the municipality. municipality. maintain the inviting appearance of our little church in the vale. Our little church is a very 'busy, warm and friendly church. We have an active Sunday School, United Church Women's Group, and a well vocalized choir. Soccer Fields agreement approved with Hydro The Town of Newcastle has given approval to enter into a final agreement agreement with Ontario Hydro for the use of Soccer Fields developed on Hydro property through a former agreement of the two parties. The fields will be maintained by the Town and used by the Darlington Darlington Youth Soccer Association for the rest of the summer. A sum of $45.000 was allotted from the Hydro Station B account to undertake this work. Shiloh and Pollard to remain as road names According to action by the Town of Newcastle General Purpose committee committee on Monday the name of Langstaff Road between lots 4 and 5 in concession 6 will revert to Shiloh. Liz Sullivan spoke in support of retaining the Langstaff name for the road while Commie Martjmell spoke in favour of the road name being changed back to Shiloh. The later said there was more historical significance of the name Shiloh than of Langstaff. The committee will also retain the name Pollard between lots 32 and 33 between concessions 3 and 4 rather than changing the road to the name Bowen! Mrs. Jensen of Jensen's Nursery spoke to counoil stating the untold cost of changing the name from Pollard as it would require all new stationary and brochures. She also said she was assured prior to printing printing their supplies that the name would remain Pollard, , A road in lot 5 between Concessions Concessions 8 and 9 is to be named McMillan Road.
