Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, July 12th, 1989-5 Newtonville Alive by Peggy Mullan become an excellent research/care centre for all types of people who need help - regardless iff religion of ethnic background. -I kind of got the shivers calling The Centre's Administrator,Mr. Crawford at first. You see,I lived at the "Home" for a year when I was just a little girl, as did my sister and brother. Hearing this complete change of face and image was really like a breath of fresh air sweeiping over a cool creek. Dubbed Newtonville's "Unofficial "Unofficial Mayor" Wallace Boughen and his wife Inez. Wally and Inez Boughen pose with pride by their I'm for 1 Canada" signs. During Canada Week every year for the past seventeen, seventeen, the couple has raised the signs becoming somewhat of a tradition in Newtonville. "We first put them up..." says Inez, about 17 years ago when Quebec first started to threaten separtism. Many passers'by have stopped to chat or to take pictures of the signs." Wally and Inez have lived in Newtonville for over thirty years, seeing many, many changes. Both feel though, that town water coming coming to Newtonville will be good for the Village, and that since growth will be limited, we will be able to remain remain a pleasant, friendly relatively small community. Few Canadians make such an outward patriotic statement as do the Boughens each years. I dare say it is a little contagious, even if it only only causes up to hold our head a shade higher. A picture is worth a thousand words! "Boys will be boys!" Newtonville buddies (1-r) Steven Green 12, Derek Arnold 11, Chris' Green 11, Scott Mullan 11 and Jason O'Donnell 10. These young lads escaped to an oasis of sorts when they spent several cooling cooling hours swimming and generally Little Scoops..... -Today is July 12. Years ago everybody knew this date as being Orangeman's Day. A Protestant- Irish day of gala celebrations, parties parties and parades. -Very seldom today, except perhaps overseas, do we hear of any rand orange events. - -I talked briefly with Mr. Norm Ritchie at Orange Headquarters in Toronto, just to find out the extent of festivities, if any, underway for 1989. -Mr. Ritchie informed me that outside of the annual Santa Claus Parade in Toronto, the Orangemans' Parade is believed to be the oldest annual parade ever. In Metcalf, Ontario, the Orange "goofing around" at Welcome's Beverley Park one day last. week. With two fair-sized, swimming holes, a raft, diving board, life guard, snack bar, washrooms, a bit of a beach and shade trees as well, the $1.00 admission was a small super beginning to a day of good clean fun. parade is held on July 12th. Across Canada, a few parades still march, usually on the second Saturday of July instead of a .working weekday. -Why? Years ago in Toronto, the Orange Parade was indeed a great, well-publicized event. "Times have changed," Mr. Ritchie explained.. "More so Toronto has changed, her people customs and lifestyles. The Orange Lodge has changed with it." -What used to be the Loyal True Blue and Orange Home for Children in Richmond Hill, is now a children's centre to offering child care, day camps, and especially mediçal treatment for muscular diseases. We nouncement, give me a call at really could use it. Letter to the Editor How can our Councillors decide . what they are worth and will be worth in three years time after only six months in office? When are our Municipal politicians going to accept accept their political responsibility, as our School Board Trustees do and decide salary increases at the END of their term for the office holders in the next term? This would eliminate any embarrassment or preoccupation with "how much can, we take the taxpayers for this time?" from the newly elected and they could get on with learning their new job and thus start earning their salary. Our system for determining the Councillor's total annual salary is UNFAIR. At the end of this term, November 1991 - Local Councillors will receive a total salary of $15,054.00 and pay income tax on $10,036.00. Regional Councillors will receive a total salary, without further increases from Region of $34,054.00 and pay income tax on $22,703.00. The Mayor's total salary, without further increases from Region will be $52,248.00 and pay income tax on $38,166.00. Local Councillors are the first guys on the public firing line...are the Regional Councillors worth over double the local Councillors rate of pay? I say NO. The Mayor should spend time being the Mayor of the Town of Newcastle and act only as a voting observer on Regional Council. The Mayor's salary is too much if thé Mayor is busy on Regional Committees, out of Town for meetings, seminars and out of Country trips. We need a full time Mayor. Send a member of Council or a qualified member of Staff to these meetings, trips etc. and have them bring a comprehensive comprehensive report back to the Mayor, Council and Taxpayers for perusal and decisions. As all of the salaries, Town and Region are paid from our tax dollars may I suggest the systgm be changed. The Town to pay the Local Councillors MORE, the Regional Councillors and Mayor LESS. Put the Local Councillors up to $20,000.00 per year, Regional , Councillors down to $30,000.00 per year (Town $11,000.00 . plus Region $19,000.00). A part time Mayor down to $39,000.00 per year (Town $20,000.00 plus Region $19dXX).00) or a full time Mayor down to $44,000.00 per year (Town $25,000.00 plus Regiôn $19,000.00. After the Council has served their three year term they should .know what the jobs entails and what they are worth'. This Council should have only decided what increases Christian Corner by Rev. Marg West We are going to be looking at some more names of Jesus this week, seeing that He is our all in all (everything we need). He has an abundance of names. In Heb. 5:9 - He is called the author of our salvation. "And being made perfect, He ■ became the author of eternal salvation salvation unto all them that obey (follow, trust in, accept) Him." Websters definition of author is an originator, isn't that super. Jesus was the originator of eternal (forever) salvation (the deliverance of the soul from sin and death). "Soul is the spiritual non material part (not our body) of mans being; the immortal part, that which survives after death of the body." Our soul is deathless, imperishable. imperishable. He also said in Heb. 12'2 "Looking "Looking unto Jésus the author and finisher of our faith." Nbw since Jesus is the author (originator) and the finisher (that which complete or perfects) we really really don't need to %o looking . anywhere else for our redemption (salvation) because we are not going to get it anywhere else. Jesus and He alone is the only way to a relationship relationship with God our Heavenly Father. Council should be given for the years 1992, 93 and '94, and been aware of the inflation rate before any raises in salary were considered for either Council members or Town staff.
