Write: Ashgrove, R.R, #4, Thunder Bay, Ontario P7C 4Z2 HELP WANTED Ontario It's a beautiful sight to see "The Bee" sailing into the Georgian Bay sunset. The two-masted schooner is a replica of a supply ship that plied the waters of the Upper Great Lakes in kthe 19th century and it manned by a volunteer crew called The Bee Brigade. The replica was built 1 at the reconstructed Historical Naval and Military Establishments set up on the outskirts of Penetanguishene following the War of 1812. I saw the replica being built at the base eight years ago. Great care was taken to make it authentic in every detail. It's a 30 tonne 49-foot beauty beauty that, under full sail, captures all the romanticism of early navel tradition. tradition. Since then, I've watched "The Bee" many'times from the kitchen window of our farmhouse which overlooks the Bay. She cuts through the waves majestically taking visitors to the historic base on twilight cruises. ' With our binoculars, Jenny and myself can see members of the Bee Brigade in their 19th century sailor outfits moving around the ship. They're people who live in the Midland-Penetang area, many of whom we've known for years. As a consequence "The Bee" has become as familiar to us as the rocky shores of the Bay and the rugged rugged pines slanted and twisted by the northwest winds. Durham Regional CRIME STOPPERS In the past, "The Bee" has always been just one of the attractions attractions at the establishments along with the handsomely appointed Officers Officers Quarters, and the scattered buildings occupied by costumed men and women simulating the lifestyles of the soldiers, sailors and their families who lived at the base in the last century. But on June 8, 1989, an event took place that set "The Bee" apart. The Governor General, Jean Sauve arrived at the base and, as thousands of visitors looked on, presented the master of "The Bee" with a naval Honourable Warrant. That is, recognition by the Royal Navy! Well sir, you never saw such pomp and ceremony! .Four horse- drawn carriages arrived, loaded with dignitaries ând naval officers. The Bee Brigade looked proud as punch standing there at attention at the King's Dock. It was a big day for "The Bee". Legitimized by the recognition the warrant provided, it immediately took on a new significance in the various protrayals of living history at the base. Now, when we look out the kitchen kitchen window we see "Her Majesty's Schooner The Bee" sailing sailing with dignity toward the horizon. But to me, she's still just my old- buddy "The Bee" cutting'through the Georgian Bay waters into the sunset in the same old way.
