Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, July 26, 1989-7 Just George As my old Sgt. Major once said, "I have some good news and some bad news - the bad news is that we're going on a night patrol, - the good news is that George is not going going with us!!! So this week I will start with what I consider to be bad news. Last Saturday I checked my 649 lottery ticket (worth 4 million) and found I had all six numbers, unfortunately unfortunately two on each of three lines -that was the closest I've come to crying in many years! But that Saturday wasn't all doom and gloom, for we attended a pool party. party. Our host and hostess layed on some wonderful food, the pool was excellent, the liquid refreshment plentiful and the company ideal. The evening rounded off with dancing, dancing, still going strong, when I finally went home, (luckily only about 20 feet away!). Well done Tom and Jackie! I never cease to be amazed at thé amount of knowledge and experience experience that I learn from other people that I meet and talk to quite casually. For instance 'I met three people at the pool party who knew (intimately) the part of London where I was a boy, and had apparently apparently visited there fairly recently. What they told me, made me very glad that I've never been back. Unlike "Lott's wife", one should never look back. (Look what happened happened to her!!) Unfortunately, I personally have so many subjects that interest me, I doubt I have the time left to really get involved in all of them, so I try to pick out the choice parts, and hope the rest will just fall into place. For example, a well known saying tells us that, "A little knowledge is dangerous," but I add "Often very necessary!" To wind up this week's story - a true account, believe it or not.. My very first trip overseas was back in 1939 when I was a young Royal Marine, and a member of the Colour Guard for the late King George, and (who is now known affectionately affectionately as the "Queen Mum) as the daily papers usually call her, during their first visit to Canada. I fell in love with this country and knew in my heart that one day I would return. A certain American General namely "McArthur" had the same idea during the war, when he left the Philippines, with his now famous remark, "I shall return" well he did return eventually, but this is where the comparison stops! We both returned -, I stayed - he didn't! And now, what would one of my stories be without at least one corh- • • » • plaint? I rather stupidly thought that our government had thought of every conceivable subject to tax (except (except their own salaries naturally), but as expected everyone else is getting getting in on the act, and today, in the mail, I received a statement from Rogers Cable saying they are increasing increasing their rates a further $3.54 per month. (Presumably so that I can "Enjoy" a lot of rubbish 1 never watch anyway.) It would seem that the mythical Robinson Crusoe had a pretty good thing, going for him after all - if you get my meaning - think about it!! And on that very satisfying remark I will close down, with the observation that you should pray for rain - the farmers need it. As usual, Bowmanville Hi to celebrate 100th anniversary Doug Jackman of Bowmanville approached council on Monday night seeking funds to upfront purchase purchase of commemorative coins for the 100th anniversary of the Bowmanville High School. Jackman said the 100th birthday of the school would be held in 1990 and that it wasr imperative to have the coins well in advance of the celebration. He said ti would cost some $8,000 for 10,000 coins.- The matter was referred to Community Community Services, the High School anniversary committee and Jackman. , Jackman did tell council that he had not received full support from the committee to proceed with the purchase. He assured council that the money would be re-imbursed to the Town When the coins were sold. Dramatic increase in traffic volume Warm summer weather and the holiday seasorf*result in a dramatic increase in traffic volume every year. 'Unfortunately, the increased volume also leads to an increase in fatal motor vehicle accidents. Last summer, 363 people died in motor vehicle accidents in areas of the province patrolled by the, Ontario Ontario Provincial Police. The major contributing factors in those accidents accidents were excessive speed, alcohol and failure to wear seat belts. Approximately 25 per cent of motorists killed were ejected from their vehicles. "Without a doubt, seat belts save lives. It is our duty to protect the driving public by ensuring proper use of seat belts and child restraints," said Inspector Bill Wicklund, OPP traffic and marine section. This Civic Day weekend - August 5, 6 , 7 - OPP R.I.D.E. teams will be out in full force. This past Victoria Dày weekend, OPP R.I.D.E., units charged 147 people with alcohol - related driving offences. offences. In addition, 269 received 12-hour suspensions. "People tend to consume more alcohol and drive longer distances in the summer. The cooperation of police forces in the summer R.I.D.E. program is intended to send a clear méssage to the public: Drinking and driving will hot be tolerated," said Wicklund.
