Some birds love it! ago. On getting out of the car in - Sewage lagoons are not what a fairly new sub-division, a most people would call a tourist familiar sound was heard. It attraction but in the field of was the chip of the Purple Mar- bird watching these lagoons are tin. My first thought^, What is attractive to birds and thus to it doing in this area' . birdwatchers. On looking up there were, a The sewage lagoons, all six, number of Purple Martins in a just north of Port Perry, are a colony house strapped to light big attraction for birds even at standard along side the street, this time of the year. It would We were told that the town appear that there are some erected a number of such colony preparing for the trip south houses throughout the town and later on and then there are those all are occupied with Purple who have spent the summer at Martins. These houses are taken the lagoons to this point. down in the fall to be repair an The list observed early Sun- ready for placing again in the day morning would include a considerable list with Canada Geese, a male Wood duck with a brood of six, Shoveler and a host of the common Mallards and their families. In the gull family there were the common Ring Bills, Bonaparte Gulls and Black Terns. The shore birds, from our identification included the Least, Sempalmated, Pictorial, the uncommon Bairds Sandpipers, Sandpipers, the Lesser Yellow Legs and the Short Billed Dowitchers all scurrying around in the dreg- ges of the open bottom of the lagoons. To this one could add the interesting Northern Phalarope circling around in the water to make waves and thus pick off insects trapped on the viscose layer on the water. It was a considerable list for the one visit but then the lagoons can attract even more at one time and have been known to do so. At the present time the lagoons are at various stages in their function from almost dried out to completely full with 5 to 6 feet of water. It is this diversity that attracts various species of birds. Possibly much more pleasant a search for birds took place last Friday evening north of Pon- typool along the banks of the headwaters of the Pigeon River. The area is being natured by the Kawartha Region Conservation Authority to retain a water supply supply for the river and to improve stream banks and natural habitat. The attraction to this area is the fact that some weeks ago we ' heard one of the most melodious bird songs, nine to ' ten seconds in length, ever and have been wanting to get a glimpse of the bird to visually identify it. It means sitting on the bank of the stream again hoping for the bird to break forth jn song. It hasn't co-operated but in the meantime we were fortunate to watch a Northern Water Thrush make it way through the lower limbs of trees on the stream bank and as well be entertained by an inquisitive Common Yellow Throat. We have only seen one Water Thrush since starting bird wat- * : ching. While on the subject of birds Donna and I attended the Forrester Forrester family r eu n ion in Goderich a couple of week-ends spring. In driving into Goderich one quickly got the impression that it was a neat, clean, interesting town. Following a tour of Goderich one had more than an impression . . it really was. One does make mental comparison comparison with your own municipality and in this case ask where is our'neat harbour, the mile long beach area with board walk, grass area and benches and as well another mile and a half of beach area being developed. Both our towns are along a lake. An interesting Town square with roads, like spokes of a wheel, radiating out. An alive commercial section for Staur- day night. And we thought of Doug Dewell and Ms. Ecelles wanting to save the features of the old Piano Factory in Bowmanville, as we viewed the numerous old homes and commercial premises the old railway station and other private and public buildings. History is well recorded in Goderich just in its old but beautiful buildings. An interesting letter from the kids to Town council i Dear Members of council "We would like to talk to you about Mr. Mark Jackman of the Clarke Museum and Archives Archives in Kirby. Mr. Jackman came to our school called Mon- signor Leo Cleary in Courtice. He taught us how to print and carve woodblocks. Wç made hats and pictures of houses and' our names with black ink. Tt was a great experience. He is going to come again in the winter to print Christmas cards. We can't wait. If we had the opportunity opportunity to do it again we wouldn't hesitate. Northumberland "travel booth Northumberland County is the only one operating a travel booth on Hwy. 401 this year from Windsor to the Quebec border. The booth operates on the east lane of Hwy. 401 south of Newtonville with an invitation to tour Northumberland county and all its interests. Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, August 2, 1989-3 Letter to the Editor The Mayor's coi" mellts at l ' ie council meeting of Monday July 24, 1989 prior to hef casting the deciding vote against our application application was disconcerting. We had always been told that each application application is judged on its own merit and only the applications received by council are dealt with or discussed. Unfortunately, it now appears this is in fact not the case. Over a year ago, and prior to us making our application, we contacted the Honorable Mayor Marie Hubbard concerning our ideas of some type of development for our property. During the summer of 1988 Mayor Hubbard (at the time Chairman of Planning) accompanied by the Town of Newcastle planning director, director, Frank Wu toured the property. The Mayor's conclusion was that the land was ideally suited for Estate residential and she was kind enough to explain to Mr. Bill Reid to hire the required expertise to compile the required reports and make application. Now, over a year later her comments comments at council are that this application application is pre mature. A lot of time and debt could have been avoided if her comments to Mr. Bill Reid had been that not enough information information is available in this area for us to base any decisions on, instead instead of her recommendation and encouragement. As has been recorded in many of the newspapers, this has been a very emotional issue. Unfortunately councillors have only heard one side of the story from the numerous phone calls. When we asked if we should obtain petitions or have people people phone their local councillors to confirm their support we were told that no, these applications are judged judged on their own merits and on staff recommendations. It is our belief that the majority support this application, application, but upon our advices many did not comb forward as we did not feel it was required. As you are aware all agencies have given their approval and staff has recommended it for approval. Of particular note is that the Ministry of Environment has given their approval 2 times at various levels, from the Minister himself on down. But we were denied because the Mayor changed her mind which appears appears to have nothing to do with the facts of this application. The Mayor went to great lengths at the council meeting to state developers have been in to see her concerning other possible development and to voice her concern about this. These statements are disturbing to us because at the time of the council meeting, no other applications had been received for the subject area. We would appreciate Mayor Hubbard's Hubbard's explanation as to what possible possible further development had to do with an application which is to be judged on its own merits. Our application now moves to the Regional level where we are optimistic optimistic that the application will finally be judged on its own merits. Unfortunately our optimism may be naive as Mayor Hubbard chairs this meeting as well. Reyriaert/Reid Local Venturers Arrive in Scotland The 1201 Orono-Newcastle venturers venturers arrived in London on Tuesday Tuesday the 25. It was nice to be on the ground after a long plane trip and many time changes, five hours worth. We were greeted at the train station station with bagpipes being played by Scottish Scouts. At camp we have met venturers and scouts from Scotland, England, Denmark, Germany, Finland, Sp ( ain, Portugal, Sweden, Thailand, Switzerland, America, Japan, France, Ireland, and others from Canada. We have taken part in activities including hikes, electronics, archery, archery, crafts, and Scottish culture and other sports. As well a day sight seeing in Edinburgh, capital of • Scotland and a half day in Perth. Nick Gallelo has been chosen as a patrol leader, Ryan Tomlinson and Kevin Scott were asked to raise our Canadian flag. We have also had entertainment by "Stagecouch 89", an Irish venturer venturer scout group who performed many well known rock and roll hits from around the world. Our group from Orono and our friends from Hampton learned a song about a yellow motorcycle, from 10 Swedish girls. We are meeting many people and have traded badges with our new friends. Watch for my next letter. "Hi, Mrs. Tomlinson from your son Ryan" - "Hi, Mom from your son Kevin," Submitted by Kevin Scott Christian Corner .. by Rev. Marg West been done. We just have, to accept In Colossians 1:18 it tells us that Jesus. Then, and only then do we Jesus is "the head of the Body, the have eternal life with Jesus, church; who is the beginning, the first bom from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence." We as Christians make up the body of Christ, and just as we have a natural body, of course we have a head, so Jesus in our head (ship). The body of Christ is the church. We also see in this verse that Jesus was the first born of the dead. This is not reincarnation like some other religion and cults believe in. Jesus was resurrected, He came back to life in the same body not someone or something else. Reincarnation is not taught anywhere in scripture. ■ Reincarnation is false hope for a lot of people. Websters definition of Reincarnation is "The belief that the souls of the dead return to earth in new forms or bodies. I don't know about you but I sure wouldn't want to come back as anyone else or perhaps a cow, bird, you name it. People are being deceived left and right by the Chief deceiver himself. There is no other way to get to God but through Jesus. We cannot make ourselves gods and never will be able to. There are a lot of people in key places who teach and believe this and because quote "they are in the limelight" people just believe what they hear. Please, please, please check it out yourself from God's word. If you don't understand what you are reading get help somewhere. Ask God to show you the truth of His word. In Matthew 7:14 Jesus tells us, "Because strait is the gate, and narrow narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it." This means there is only one way to reach God, that's why few find it, they think they have to do it • themselves. Many people miss it because we can't do it.
