Once again, a successful United Way "mini-drive" was put on by the staff of the Bank of Commerce in Newcastle, Friday, Friday, August 4th. Cold drinks and hot dogs were sered up in an old fashioned way, outside of the bank. Employees at the Bank send out sincere thanks to the management of the IGA who were so generous in donating condiments for this fund raiser. Everyone looks forward to the next United Way community community fund raising event that is becoming somewhat of a unique tradition in the village. Heartfelt Heartfelt thanks to all who care and continue to support the United Way! Little Scoops... - A special note of recognition is sent today to Wendy Goodall of Bellamy Road, just off the Baseline. In my last column I neglected to mention Wendy and all the tremendous work she did, alongside her husband Henry on their beautiful flower gardens photographed earlier. Thank you both for decorating' a little part of our community! - Welcome home to the Barton family who spent 3 wonderful weeks touring out to beautiful Victoria, B.C. and straight down to San Francisco. - Belated Birthdày greetings and wishes for life's best are extended extended to young Ryan Farrow who turned eleven on the Uth, and to lovely Trish Stapleton who celebrated her seventeenth on the same day. - Happy Anniversary wishes on August 19th to Newtonville's" Bill and Mary Skelding. - Keep in mind the "Studs" display at the Clarke Township Museum and Archives. The show displays mens fashions and clothing from the 1840's to 1920 and ' continues through August. -The museum is closed Mondays. It is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Friday, Friday, on the weekends, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. - Garbage is being thrown around the monument not 50 feet from the trash can! Drop offs can be made anytime to Cowan's on Friday, September l'5th from. 5 - 7 p.tn. or on Saturday, September 16, 9 *- 10 a.m. What a great time to sort out all that extra unused equipment to sell for a super cause! - Also throughout September, businesses in the area will be handing out colouring contest sheets for the youngsters. - Euchre maintains to be a success success even though it is summertime...winners summertime...winners on last Friday's draw were: Pearl Clark, Olive Li111c, Mar g Todd and Madeline Buckley. ■ High scores came in from Arthur Austin with an 87, Wally Boughen 83, Dorothy Austin 82, Dorothy Branch 82, Robin Alldread 81, and Milford Simmerson with, à 79. Lately it has been more pleasant to sit outside after supper and yes it is true 1 did see a gorgeous maple beginning to turn. The stores have laid out all the back- to-school goodies and summer clothes are scarcer by the day. It's a lovely time of year and many weeks are left of warm sunshine, time, to enjoy outdoor activities. Township considering naming roads Hope Township is considering considering a scheme to name or number roads within the municipality. A number of complaints have been received in finding addresses addresses in the municipality. A combination of names and numbers is under consideration. Metro garbage to Orillia area? Metro Toronto _ is wooing Orillia Township with a plan to bring one-third of Metro's garbage garbage to the municipality for a five year period. The proposal would have Metro purchase a 300 acre old quarry site for recycling and landfill. The Township is asking more information from Metro before considering the proposal. Outing to raise funds for disabled riders program The Durham Region Hoseback riding for the Handicapped Handicapped Association is holding a riding outing on September , 16th at Hoskin Stables in Blackstock. Buffet lunch, trail snacks will be provided along with the 25 km. course. The Association is seeking experienced experienced riders to take part to raise funds for the Handicapped Rider program. Nature Trail walk Sunday,'August 20th The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority is conducting conducting a nature trail walk at Purple Woods Conservation Area On Sunday, August 20th at 7:00 p.m. The event is free. Meet at the parking lot, on the south-east corner of Simcoe Street East and the 10th Concession. From Around the Region Durham College expands to Beaverton, Port Hope Durham College will open a campus door in Port Hope this year after considerable interest being shown earlier this year at an information night. Registrations will be taken on September 1st at their Port. Hope office on Mill Street. The College also is expanding into Beaverton this year to set up a basic skills training program. program. Present "Wish Lists" costing $ millions A four-member federal liberal task force met municipal representatives last week in Cobourg concerning funds needed to update local municipal services. The 'wish list' from Cobourg totaled $79 million to bring all municipal services up to scratch, Campbellford $8 million, Peterborough $4.5 million. The task force states that every Canadian is entitled to clean water, fresh air, adequate sewer systems, safe bridges and good roads. A major project for Hamilton Township A major project for Hamilton Township may have moved a few steps closer. The project on 165 acres would include include a 120-room hotel, 18 hole golf course, and up to 250 cond- minium units. It was first proposed in 1983. Storage tanks have left Cobourg Two storage tanks weighing 120 and 92 tonnes have been transferred from the Cobourg Harbour area to an Oshawa harbour location. The tanks are owned by McAsphalt and will be used in their operation in Oshawa. Durham Police take part in fundraiser Over 120 members of the Durham regional Police took part in the Special Olympics fundraiser last Thursday. They ran the course of 64 kilometers frbm the western boundary of Pickering Township to the eastern boundary with Hope Township in relays. The runners met the Special Olympians who took part in the Special Olympic games at the Regional headquarters in Whitby. The local Board of Education had sought funding for the new school and listed the school as its third priority.
