After waiting six months of this year for summer to arrive, it finally did materialize for a period of roughly five weeks, giving us the hot summer days (and extremely enervating nights) that 1 had waited for, but since then, to quote Somerset Maughan -- "The rain poured down without ceasing," (unquote). This did not happen however on the evening,of the P.C. picnic in Orono, .which was sunny and warm, where I met a lot of my friends and neighbours, and of course our host Ross Stevenson (whom I had met before) and his attractive attractive and efficient assistant Louise. I couldn't get close to Sam, or perhaps he just saw me coming? And while I'm on the thorny subject subject of politics I must agree, and add to two statements that the Rev. Marg West made two weeks ago, when she stated (and I quote) "our government is a joke," unfortunately unfortunately Marg, "the joke is on us!" And at the end of her. article, she asked us to "take time to pray for those in government," to which 1 reply -- "pray that "one" at least never gets re-elected." So endeth the lesson!! My neighbours Bill and- Mary, who are very well known in this community, have recently returned from a vacation to the west coast, that included a vpyage on the cruise ship "Nieuw Amsterdam" up the Letter to the Editor Dear Roy: At the last meeting of Newcastle Council, July 24, while presenting our committee's objections to the Reid/Reynaert development proposal, proposal, I outlined our committee's concern over the possible effect that new homes in the area could conceivably conceivably have on our water supplies, both wells and streams. At that meeting, Councillor Diane Hamre, the councillor for our ward, indicated indicated there was no problem because of an agreement between each developer and the town, protecting protecting the water sources among . other things. As it is our understanding understanding that these agreements are both private and unique in each application, application, I wrote the enclosed letter to Councillor Hamre to get further information information as to how we are protected. protected. It has now been over a' month, and we have had neither an answer not even an acknowledgement of our inquiries. We hope this delay is not an indication indication of how seriously Councillor Councillor Hamre takes citizen's issues. We would, however, like to know if readers.of your paper share our concerns about the municipality's ability to protect us. If so, we ask them to: 1) Let us know (S.A.G.A., R. R. #1, Orono) and 2) LET COUNCILLOR HAMRE KNOW! Yours very truly, Katherine Guselle, Chairman, S.A.G.A. (Save the Ganaraska, AGAIN) (Enclosed letter to Councillor Hamre) Dated July 25, 1989 Dear Councillor Hamre: Just in clarification of an issue you raised at the Council meeting last Monday evening, 1 would like to have a little more information. 1 believe it is correct to say that a subdivider signs an agreement with the Town that all lots shall have drilled wells. 1) Is the subdivide!' required to drill the well? 2) Does the agreement specify into what aquifer the well on each lot shall he drilled? 3) Who monitors the agreement to see if it is carried out properly? 4) When the lot is sold, is the agreement agreement with all its stipulations registered against the deed, to follow in perpetuity? 5) In the event that whoever drills the well inadvertently or intentionally intentionally contravenes the agreement and creates a problem with a neighbour's well, what recourse does the neighbour have? 6) Does the Town enter into some sort of convenant that it will ensure that the agreement is adhered to, and be responsible for correcting infringements? infringements? ■ 7) Are springs and other artesian sources protected the same way? These questions are, obviously, basic to our concerns. Perhaps you would be good- enough to clarify them for us. , Yours truly, Katherine Guselle Chair, S.A.G.A. There's nothing like an ocean trip to broaden the mind, give one a whole new perspective of life, (and hopefully settle the stomach eventually) eventually) but, please neighbours when you talk to Bill, don't mention the words cost, or price, it might ruin his memories! ! ! Anyway, welcome home neighbours - we missed you. Just yesterday I received a tape from England where they are apparently apparently gètting "our" summer, there's even a water shortage in some areas, and temperatures in the 80 - ,90 degrees range, and with that remark I must make another quote. (Have you noticed how other people people write my stories for me??) Years ago, Marie Antonette is recorded as saying, "Let them eat cake," and so to my ex-countrymen I will "follow suit" and say - no water? "Then let them drink beer" ■-- (as though any true Englishman " needs that reminder!) And so before I close, I give you a passing thought, take heed my friends, "Christmas is only seventeen seventeen weeks away." How does that grab you? So with a premature "welcome to fall", and I imagine I didn't win too many friends with that reminder? I will hopefully remain. remain.
