Kendal News (Continued from page 2) for which they accepted some eggs and father's gratitude for supplying our need. Cattle in quicksand. We were hunting along the river for the two ponies when we found loaded bushes of black currants, which we picked. Later when getting getting the ponies, we saw farther up the river several of the cattle deep in Report shows decline in building activity In a summary of new residential units in the Town of Newcastle a report lists a number of 83 for Bowman ville for the. seven month period of 1989. This compares a 12 month total'of 347 in 1988. Courtice still rides the crest of a wave with 617 new units for the seven months compared to a total of 633 units for the twelve months of 1988. Newcastle Village records 159 for the seven month period with 317 all An application for an amendment amendment to the Town of Newcastle Comprehensive Zoning By-law has been received which if permitted would allow a convenience outlet complex of some 500 square meters on Highway 2 west of Newcastle Village. The application came before a public meeting on Tuesday evening. It was pointed out in a report that the amendment may not be necessary as the use of lands in the area would allow the convenience water. Upon investigating there were seven head - Uncle Joe's oxen Cap and major with five cows. They were unable to budge, so away I sped to where the men were ploughing to tell them of what seemed a dire catastrophe. With horses and our oxen (for once not driving us tti despair), chains, planks, ropes, axes and shovels, the men hurried to the scene of action. It seems very strange that in all the long twisted miles of the Saskatchewan Saskatchewan river these cattle had to choose this one quicksand spot for a drink and coolness from mosquitoes, mosquitoes, big flies and gnats, although if you rubbed underneath them your hand dripped blood. Martha and I brought lunch and kept a fire for a smudge and to warm the men as stripped to the waist in the cool water they occasionally occasionally came out to warm. They tried to dam the beasts, then put a plank under to prevent them from slipping or sinking out of sight altogether. Finally they could work rope under and about them, these ropes and chains fastened to a whiffle whiffle tree on our oxen with many haws, gees whoa-haws at length each beast was released from the suction. On the last haul father twisted his arm. In rather an angry sunset we hastened the cattle home after what seemed an endless anxious day. Mother had been summoned to a sick bed. Martha was sure mother would return to Palmerston. But where was the railway fare from Brandon and how would she get to the railway; one cannot fly without a feather! Tired; hungry and very desolate we did our belated chores. Presently mother came home to tell us we had another cousin; we did not enthuse much or care so long as we had our dear mother to 1 ourselves again. That night the wind howled loud and long trying to blow us out of the place, dust over everything. Next morning 1 was out on blind pony to bring the cattle home. We had not located them the night , previous and we were; glad to have milk again. ■ Love from, Maryanne of last year. Newcastle may however be dropping dropping in number of permits being issued even though the seven month period in both 1989 and 1988 is quite similar. For July 1989 the number of residential permits has dropped to 72 which compares with 142 during the same period in' 1988. Value of residential permits are somewhat higher in 1989 as compared with 1988. operations. It was also questioned if there would-be need for any change in the Regional Official Plan. The only objection for the proposal proposal came from the Ministry of Transport as there was not enough frontage on Highway No. 2 for a • commercial entrance. The application application showed 100 feet while the Ministry standards require 150 ' feet. The aaplication has. been return- • ed to the Planning Department for further review and report to council. council.
