Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, September 20, 1989-5 Newton ville Alive by Peggy Mullan Close your eyes. Imagine a rainbow. rainbow. Now open your eÿes and look around. 'Flowers everywhere have accepted Mother Nature's request for an encore performance and it is gorgeous. "Abound just about everywhere" people have gone out of their way this summer creating a breath taking taking flowering summer. Along driveways, and walkways, front porches, back decks, lawns, gardens and in urns and baskets, colour bursts fragrances compliment compliment and adorn homes in Newton- ville, Kendal, Orono, Welcome, Port Hope, Port Granby, Crooked Creek, Kirby, Garden Hill and every other community in between. Early fall is simply gorgeous. Gardens are easily spruced up since weeds are now minimal and with cooler evenings, the array of colours seem to be more vibrant. More time is, or should be taken to enjoy their beauty. What has become more popular the last year or so, is the idea'of having many assorted flowering plants growing in one basket, or in a particular area. Hanging baskets of ivy geraniums, striped petunias, miniature orange and yellow marigolds, with sprays of delicate alyssum, fern and lobelia all come together strangely enough to make our summer more beautiful. With memories and pictures close at hand, you might want to do some serious seed collecting now. Dry the seeds out, label, and have fun with planting indoors next January or February. It is recommended roses not be pruned at all until the spring. Also, do not be over anxious to cover the base of your roses with leaves and mulch. Covering too early in the fall will cause root rot since far too much moisture is withheld. Now is the ideal time to give some thought to next year's lawn and garden. Shrubs and trees will take if planted within the next 4 or 5 weeks. You will be so glad you did, come next April.
