12-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, September 27, 1989 Bill Bramah and his Ontario Lini Grol is a beautiful 76 year old woman, happily single, with a bear-trap mind and talents expressed expressed in works of artistry that flow from the heart. She paints in oils, does some sculpture, writes books of poetry and prose, but is likely best knowm for her scissors art. The closest I've ever come to this type of art work was at the tender age of three when I took a run at my mother's lace curtains with a pair of scissors. As I recall, my artistic efforts efforts along these lines were abruptly and rather violently terminated. Lini Grol's cutting career took a different twist. Although she began to study the ancient art of scissors cutting when she was a child in her native Holland, it was along more intricate, creative lines. Today, when you enter her studio in the Niagara Peninsula village of Fonthill, you see magnificent pictures pictures hanging on the walls that appear appear to be India ink drawings at first glance. But they've all been cut from sheets of paper with a simple pair of scissors. There are cuttings of birds, animals, flowers, trees and trailing vines that have been pasted on backgrounds of heavy paper or Don River cleanup outlined in report A report released today identifies five levels of environmental action on the Don River, ranging from prevention of further degradation to full restoration of water quality and water use. The Strategy for Improvement of Don River Water Quality Summary Report, produced by consultants for the multi-agency Toronto Area Watershed Management Study, outlines cleanup options to restore the river's fishery, protect its aquatic life, and allow safe swimming swimming and other recreational activities. The strategy's major options deal with reduction of urban runoff from storm sewers, reduction of sewage overflows from combined sewers, and improvement or elimination of the North Toronto Sewage Treatment Plant which discharges to the Don. The report identified stormwater runoff as the river's main source of pollution. The report-recommends both source controls, which reduce the volume entering the storm sewer system, and retention ponds. These ponds detain stormwater, allowing time for bacterial decay and the settling settling of contaminated sediments. The ponds may require overflow disinfection to achieve desired reductions in bacteria levels, the report says. The report recommends changes to planning and approval processes to ensure that developers bear the costs of installing stormwater retention retention ponds and other control methods in .future projects and redevelopments. 1 ' Other contrôl measures suggested in the strategy are the detection and removal of illegal sewer connections, connections, enhanced spills control efforts efforts and public education to improve improve control of household chemicals. Don River pollution has been reduced by past actions including the shutdown of small sewage treatment treatment plants discharging into the river, removal of illegal cross- connections allowing sanitary sewage to enter storm sewers which flow into (lie river, improved storm water management in recently developed areas, and the reduction of combined sewer overflows into the river, the report notes. In addition, Environment Ontario Ontario will remain a consultant to develop an unmanned, continuous spill detection device to detect and characterize spills at major storm outfalls and tributary steams. The ministry plans to run a demonstration demonstration project next year, then deploy a number of devices, using the results to identify and abate dumping incidents, incidents, spills and intermittent pollution sources. - The ministry is also developing standards for the design of storm-' water pollution control facilities such as retention ponds and buffer strips along watercourses to reduce runoff. These standards will become the ministry's guidelines for future developments, and will benefit Metro waterways as they are applied to upstream developments. As well, the ministry allocated $9.25 million in 1988/89 to support Metro waterways cleanup projects such as sewage plant improvements, and detection and removal of illegal sewer line cross connections., - The Improvement Strategy report released today will be reviewed by 'the «, public and the Toronto Remedial Action Plan team and its Public Advisory Committee. Many others have to do with family life - a mother and child, a couple and their baby, or similar portrayals. "I'm an admirer and lover of family life," she says. "It's the building block of society and I do anything I can to further it in my scissor cutting, poems and books." Her productivity has been enormous. enormous. Her works have been displayed at innumerable shows. Buyers from other countries have taken them to their homelands and she has established herself as a creative artist on an international scale. Lini is quick-witted, knowledgeable, with an aura of tranquility and wisdom characteristic of true philosophers of life. Her depth of fe.eling is reflected in her scissors art. It's a 2000 year old craft and Lini carries on the tradition with her unusual gifts. It's quite amazing when you consider that she draws no designs. She cuts the paper freehand. In this intriguing art form, the artist^ brushes are simply the scissors. A New Fiscal Year Trustees voted to support a new fiscal year starting in September in a survey circulated by the Ontario Public School Boards Association rather than continue with the one "We look to the public to play a key role in determining water quality quality goals and remedial actions for the Don River," Environment Minister Jim Bradley said. The report estimates cleanup measures could cost between $30 million and $60 million per year over a 10 to 20 year period. The total Don River cleanup cost could exceed $1 billion. Mr. Bradley noted that Prime Minister Brian Mulroney has promised promised $125 million toward the cleanup of the entire Great Lakes system. "We look forward to meeting with the Federal Government to ■ discuss the application of this funding funding to the Don River," Mr. Bradley said. "We also need to talk about a more realistic federal funding program, for program, for the mammoth cleanup of ' the Great Lakes. As the world's largest freshwater supply, a clean Great Lakes system is a prize beyond price," Mr. Bradley said.
