Reproductions a feature Canada Post to setup retail outlet in Orono The Canada Post Corporation in an effort ■ to expand its services to residents in the Village of Orono and area is seeking a local business in the Village to provide retail postal services under contract. According to a telephone interview interview with Karen Nicholson the new proposed outlet would provide postal products such as stamps, money order, C.O.D. service and parcel service 1 . These Services would be provided during the business hours of the particular operation. Nicholson said that in tp-day's society it is common for both the husband and wife to be working and possible extended hours would provide greater service. She said the service could be available evenings and on week-ends. She said in some cases it's available 24 hours, seven- days a week. Nicholson said the retail outlet would complement the service already supplied by the existing corporate corporate post office. Futher, she said there would be no cut-back of staff at the existing office nor to her knowledge was there any intention of closing the existing office. Nicholson said it was a policy of Canada Post, to expand services and that similar invitations are now being being sought in Newcastle Village, Brooklin and Port Perry. She said that such an outlet recently was opened in Millbrook. 1 She also said it is a policy now for Canada Post, to advertise in the' news media for applications. Patterson expects the subcontractor subcontractor ' to be in Orono this Wednesday to install the curbs with two to three days to complete the work. At this point the Town comes into into play again laying the "A" gravel for the road bpd and as well prepares the base for the sidewalks. The contract, Harden and King with a sub-contractor will lay the sidewalks and undertake the paving of the streets. There is still the individual drives to complete and extensive landscaping landscaping with a major project at the corner corner of Main and Somerville Drive to be completed. Patterson said he was pleased with the work which has been undertaken by the Town itself on the project. He did say that there has been some delay accorded to some of the sub-contracts to this point. (Continued page 2) Water available for 22 infilling lots in Orono In a report from the Durham Region Public Works department it stated that infilling development could be permitted in the Village of Orono in Zone One up to 22 housing housing units. Zone One is the existing area supplied supplied by municipal water from the stand pipe in the north of the Village. Zone Two includes the Orono Estates which is supplied water from' a pump to the Estates. The report suggests that water is not available for Zone Two. it was pointed out in the report that rehabilitation had been completed completed on Well No. 2 in the south of the Village. Capacity has been improved improved to 75 gallons per minute but still the well is only 75 percent of its original capacity. It was expected that water from the well could be mixed with water from Well No. 3, west of Orono, but due to sodium content, three times above the allowable level, this is not to be undertaken. It may be used only for emergency supplies such as fires. The Region will continue continue to monitor the well as for sodium content. The sodium content content has been increasing in the well year after year, A total of $35,000 was spent to rehabilitate the well. It was noted in the report that well No. 3 was producing some 200 gallons per minute and that this would allow for 22 additional infilling infilling housing units in Orono. This would be in the area where water- mains now exist. Allowing more than the 22 units would require an additional well and additional vyater storage at an estimated cost of $500,000. Well No. 1, south of the Cemetery, has been out of service for sometime. It had a high content of sodium. Town council and Ontario Hydro come to terms on a settlement Mayor Hubbard and members of council came on strong Monday night at council meeting in support of an agreement reached with Ontario Ontario Hydro on Friday of last week. They denounced views expressed by former Mayor Winters and former councillor Ann Cowman who were quoted in the Oshawa Times orf Monday of a sell-out by the Town to Ontario Hydro in their negotiations. Mayor Hubbard congratulated the Town's chief administrative officer, officer, Larry Kotseff, legal counsel, R. Hefferon and council in their endeavours over the past eight months months of negotiations with Ontario Hydro. Mayor Hubbard said it was a very good and * sound document (the agreement) that has set a precedent in such undertakings. The card parties will begin on Wednesday, October 4th in the Orono Town Hall with the first cut of the deck being made at 8:00 p.m. LUCKY WINNER OF DRAW Bill Forrest of R.R. 1 Orono was the winner of 450 litres of furnace oil in the Orono Fair draw sponsored by the Durham Farmers' County Co-op. CHRISTMAS CRAFT SHOW IN ORONO HALL The Orono Town Hall Board are again sponsoring a Christmas Craft sale this year on November 17, 18 and 19. To this point some fourteen to fifteen interested parties have signed up to be part of the show, many being new entries to the show. There apparently apparently are still some openings with the possibility that both floors will be used for the event. ; Members of St. Saviour's Anglican Church in Orono and St. George's Anglican Church,' Newcastle, of the Clarke Parish transported a wooden Cross of Christ to St. Johns' Anglican Church in Bowmanville on thurs- dày pvening. The event commemorates commemorates the Sesquieentennial célébrations of the founding of the 'Anglican Diocese of Toronto in 1839. A short outdoor service was held at St. Saviours. The cross will be travelling to each Anglican parish in the Toronto Diocese this year.
