It's not a fashion trend. Those boots were made for walking in muddy fields and barnyards. Just the thing for cattle with sore feet. The germ of the idea was given by farmers to Jim Wells, a fast- talking, fast-moving, grey-haired stocky Scot who runs a work-wear store in the village of Elmira, in Mennonite country. Jim isn't a farmer. He's a salesman, and his sales instincts were triggered as he listened to his farmer-customers complain about their cattle's disease or injured hooves being infected as they roamed roamed over wet and sloppy patches of REAL ESTATE 47 ACRE FARM $275,000 Beaverton Orillia Area. 10 room newly-renovated house, modern bathrooms, kitchen. He did some research, and learned learned there were protective coverings on the market in Europe and Australia, but they were slip-on, mostly plastic affairs that didn't seem to fill the bill. Jim thought rubber boots might do the trick. He designed a boot, shaped to a cow's foot, and had a limited number made up at Kaufman Kaufman Rubber in nearby Kitchener. His farmer friends snapped them up. As word got around, cattle farmers from beyond the district began phoning in orders. In a few weeks, he had sold about 5,000 units, and Kaufmans had to hire ad- ' ditional staff to keep up with the demand. Wells realized he had a tiger by the tail. He set up franchises from Vancouver to the Maritimes, and put salesmen on the road. One of the first of the local farmers to get Jim's new product was Rick Shantz who has a dairy farm a few miles from Elmira. We went out to the Shantz farm to see "Shoes For Moos" on the hoof, as it were. We watched as Rick and Jim gave us a demonstration of how the boots are used. Jim patted a gentle cow named Mary, while Rick lifted up one of her front hooves and put on the black boot. Then he buckled up two yellow straps. The yellow straps are for easy identification when cattle are in the fields. "The boots are just what we needed,"-said Rick. "If cattle have hoof rot they may not need medication medication as long as the hoof can be kept clean and. dry for a few days," Wells was saying the market is unlimited. "There are about 2 million cattle in Canada, and about 11 million in the States," he said. "The U.S. is our next market." There's no question' that both farmers and their cattle will benefit from Jim's idea. And for fashionconscious fashionconscious cows, "Shoes For Moos" provide the niftiest booties in the barnyard.
