At the Clarke-Newcastle PC Pot Luck Supper Sam Cureatz, M.P.P. Durham East, Kay Weatherall, Port Hope and Ross Stevenson, M.P. Durham were present at the recent Clark'e- Newcastle PC Riding Association pot lunch supper and annual IP meeting where they took the opportunity opportunity to provide those present with the latest on the political scene. He said the government expects to pass their No-fault car insurance by January 1st. He spoké of the Sunday Shopping Shopping legislation which was challenged this past week-end and k which involved involved some 400 to 500 grocery stores in central and south-western Ontario. He said it would be big fight at the municipal level. Cureatz also Spoke of the selection selection of a new leader for the Conservatives Conservatives and that candidates for the ' position will be able to declare their candidacy as of January 22nd. The election is to be held on May 12th. He said all card-carrying conservatives conservatives will be able to vote on May 12th. He admitted that people were going to have to pay more for services but that the increase in the cost of living would be no more than 2.25 percent. percent. Stevenson said there was a slight chance that the 9 percent could be reduced to 7 percent. In future speaking of the GST he said that 80 percent of those appearing appearing before the committee do favour the value added tax, but don't want it to apply to them. He , said many are asking that the federal government get together with the provinces to eliminate what is expected to happen with a two- tax system. Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, November 15, 1989-11 One member - one vote to select new PC leader Kay Weatherall, Port Hope,and a member of the Ontario Progressive Conservative Association briefly outlined the procedure to be held to elect a new leader for the conservative conservative party. She was speaking to the Clarke-Newcastle Progressive Conservative Association on Friday evening. She said it was a complex process but that party members should be nroud that every member of the party will now have a say in the election of the new leader. She said the procedure has been discussed over the past fourteen months and that over 72 percent have approved of the process. Weatherall said no possible candidate candidate can declare prior to January 22nd nor can they raise or spend any money prior to that 1 date. She said membership at the riding association level must be purchased by March 29th and that each card- carrying member will have one vote come election day, May 12th. "This is a most democratic system", she said and will be carried carried out in all of the 130 Tidings in Ontario. She also said each member will vote in their own riding and it is to be hoped that there is only one voting location. Weatherall said the association plans to hold six leadership debates •across the province prior to May 12th. On election day, May 12th, an election centre will be established in the Coloseum, Exhibition Place, Toronto, where the final tally will be undertaken. He also named Jack Pickerskill, Bob Stanfield and Ed Broadbent as other supporters of the accord.
