Wednesday, November 15, 1989 OR United County Novice has busy week Kendal Hall News Report On Monday, November 6th, the Orono arena saw the Orono Novice play Newcastle Novice in the first game of the season in the United County Hockey League. The kids put in a good effort but were cut short on the scoreboard after running into a hot goalie. Newcastle was first on the board with 3 goals. It wasn't until the second second period at 4:17 that Jamie Richter put one past Newcastle's goalie, assisted by Mike Morrison and Ryan Schoep. Orono players were trying their best, unfortunately Newcastle came back with 2 more pretty goals. In the last half of the second Steve Foster put one between the pipes with assists going to Murphy Irvine and Jamie Richter. Going into the third period Newcastle put 2 more up on the board. Orono kept trying and managed to get one more goal scored by Steve Foster assisted by Amy-Jane McAllister. Orono came out on the short end of the stick losing 7-3. Orono players played a strong game and had numerous shots on the Newcastle Newcastle goalie. Excellent goaltending by Jonas Bonnetta, stopping , many shots on net. Thursday, November 9th, the Orono Novice travelled to Grafton's arena to play the home team #2. It was a long trip back but the effort was well worth it, even though the final score saw Orono down by three. Grafton started off strong with a goal within the first 2 minutes of play. Grafton's #6 received a penalty penalty for tripping, giving Orono a powerplay, which Andrew Reid took advantage of with a breakaway shot on goal, but Grafton's Grafton's goalie made the save. Assisting" on the goals were Greg Bester and Justin Standeven; Matthew Reid and Mike Gibson; Brad Copping and Kyle Moore; and the fourth goal was unassisted. Thus the first period ended with Team 1 up by a convincing 4 -0 lead. Moving Bobby back on defense seemed to play a small part in the outcome of the second period. Team 2 quickly came back with three goals of their own. Scoring were Andrew Beacock from Jamie Parry and Brandon Caruana; Tyler Robinson front Andrew Beacock came back getting one past Jonas Bonnetta, who put on an outstanding outstanding performance in net. The second period started off like the first with Grafton scoring again. But the Orono players didn't give up, they kept digging for the puck which paid off. Steve Foster scored assisted by Jeremy Pare. Before the second period ended Steve Foster did it again, assisted by Amy-Jane McAllister. Grafton also came back and scored. Third period saw Murphy Irvine put one in for Orono on a breakaway. But the honje team notched notched two more to put the icing on the cake ending 6-3. Orono fans on Friday, November 10 saw the Orono Novice get their first victory for the '89 season, defeating Bowmanville in an exhibition exhibition game 3-1, here in Orono. Orono 'quickly got on the scoreboard as Alan Robb fired a shot assisted by Mike Morrison. Some good saves were made by Ryan Schoep as Bowmanville had several good scoring chances. Second period saw Murphy Irvine Irvine on a breakaway scoring for Orono. i The third period saw Orono score a short-handed goal by Mike Morrison Morrison assisted by Kevin Copping. Bowmanville after many good chances put one past Ryan Schoep. Bowmanville with the pressure on pulled their goalie with half a minute to go. Adding to that Orono got a penalty and it was a very exciting exciting finish. Also playing an excellent game were Clint Hawkshaw, Amy-Jane McAllister, Kyle Beacock, Jonas Bonnetta, Steve Foster, Jeremy Pare, Andrew Reid and Jamie Richter. and Jamie Parry; and Tyler Robin-, son from Jeff Thompson and Brandon Brandon Hills. Team 1 came back with one more score of their own from Bobby Witheridge assisted by Matthew Matthew Reid and Jake Bonnetta. This closed the second period with Team 1 still on top by a 5 - 3 .score. 'Things got 'very tense in the final period as Team 2 poured it on and «scored 3 in a row on net minder Greg Shetler to take a 6 - 5 lead. Scoring were Dave Lammers unassisted; Jamie Parry from Andrew Andrew Beacock and Tyler Robinson; and Andrew Beacock from Tyler Robinson and Jonathan Black. It wasn't the eftd for Team 1 however, as they put on some pressure of • their own to get 1 more goal and even the score at 6i Scoring with just 1 minute remaining in the game was Bobby Witheridge from Greg Bester and Paul Landers. It was a very good "and exciting" first game of the season and all the boys played well especially net minders Greg Shetler and Chris Bouley. Team 1 played their second game of the season on Saturday, November 11th at Newcastle. This was one of our most difficult op r ponents'last season and we were determined to give them a game that 1 they would remember. Orono The men of Kendal L.O.L. #405 met at the hall- on Wednesday, November 1st- The Brookes Memorial Junior Lodge, met on Thursday, November 2nd, plans are in place for entering a float in the Santa Claus Parade, which .will be taking place, in Bowmanville, on Saturday, November 18th. These young people are always eager to take part and add to the enjoyment of those watching. On Thursday, November 9th, following an excellent excellent Pot-luck slipper, the Ladies of Kendal Hills L.O.B.A, No. 1420, held their meeting. We were honoured to have visiting with us, ■ R. W. Sister Marion Hill, Grand Mistress of the Grand Orange Orono Figure Skating news report by Lynne Lemieux Skating competitions in the area have now started and the girls from Orono have been working hard eparing themselves. On ovember 4th at the Cobourg Skate, Melissa Colville skated well and placed third in the Juvenile Ladies Level. Next week in Brockville, the Eastern Ontario Sectionals will be held. Representing the Orono club will be Tanya Clemens, Briar Ransberry, and Tracy Eames. Melissa Allin will compete in the Juvenile Invitational to be held at the same time. We wish you well at the competition. At the Orono skating club dance, this coming Saturday, November 18th, the draw will be held for the Package weekend at the Toronto Harbor Weston Hotel and the Wit- tenair Ladies Watch. All ticket receipts should be in as soon as possible. Thank you to all helpers as the November 17th banquet. We will be doing our second banquet on November 24th. Following the meeting a Silent auction was held and lunch was served. Remember, election of Officers Officers will, be taking place at our next meeting. On Friday, November 10th, there were 13 tables in play at the Euchre party, high score was held by Jean Allen, 2nd high Norma Moffat, 3rd high Harvey Partner, 4th high Frank Drinkle. The 50/50 draw was won by, Eddie Couroux. If you know of any others that enjoy a friendly night of Euchre, tell them about, these card parties, newcomers are always welcome and an excellent lunch is always served. See you on November 24th.
