It was an impressive service School Board fears loss of revenue with Bill 65 The Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education is to inform all members of the Ontario legislature that the public school board, cannot afford to lose any of its industrial and commercial tax base due to Bill 65. The Board passed a resolution to support this issue last Thursday evening. Bill 65 received its second reading in the legislature as an approval in principle. It is now to go to the committee for debate and for public hearings across the province. The public hearings are to start this week and are to be completed by November 23rd. Following a report from the committee committee the bill could receive its third reading for approval. The bill proposes a sharing of industrial industrial and commercial tax base between the public boards and the separate school boards in the same ratio as residential assessment. The local board wants to be assured that once the legislation goes through the government will fulfill its commitment that no public school board in the province will suffer a loss of revenue as a result of the passing of Bill 65. The superintendent of business for the board said the bill will have a serious affect on all public boards who, in the past, have always had domain over industrial and commercial commercial assessment. Higher rates will be phased in for industrial users. The figures at this point are preliminary figures. Lot levies to increase in Durham Durham Region is expected to increase its lot levies this week at council meeting by twelve percent. In April of this year the Region doubled lot levies which were to hold for a twelve month period. However due to a provincial bill that should be passed this year municipalities must hold firm on charges for a two year period. The Region is, looking to get their increase increase of 12 percent before the passing passing of provincial legislation. The Region would collect $6,460 for each house, $3,944 for each one-bedroom apartment and $5,202 for larger apartments.
